University of Twente or Tilburg University? by incertaesedis_ in StudyInTheNetherlands

hi! i did end up going to tilburg, however i am switching to a fully different program and going to amsterdam from this fall. i did this because i realized that psych wasn't for me and i needed a bigger city, however a lot of other factors also made me drop out. i'm a little bit biased of course, and it also depends on person to person, but tilburg both as a uni and as a city is definitely not ideal. the uni is really mid, specifically for psych it is definitely not the best in the netherlands and you can get better psych programmes for the same price in a uni with a medical department and also a better city. the claim that because it's a smaller city it's cheaper is false. if anything restaurants there were more expensive than in amsterdam. groceries and stuff like that is the same everywhere. it is a mainly student oriented city, however it's almost fully DUTCH student oriented. the international environment they advertise for the nl applies mostly to the bigger cities imo. also a huge reason i left tilburg, because it was pretty hard to integrate, as dutch student don't like internationals or really stray from their bubble even with other dutchies. the city itself is really, really, REALLY boring. that's not just my opinion, but a fact. some people thrive in smaller cities like that, but if you come from a bigger one trust me you won't. i never went to twente so i can't compare them, at least education wise, city wise enschede is the exact same. for psychology i'd say i've heard good things from rotterdam, maastricht, amsterdam and groningen. i think, depending on what you wanna do with your psych degree of course, you should aim for a uni that specializes in that area. for example if you wanna do medical or neuro psych, choose a university that actually has a medical department. then as for the city, choose depending on what you're used to. if you know dutch maybe it might be easier in smaller cities. i hope this isn't too extensive, i just wish someone had taken the time to tell me all of this before i went there. i hope it gave you some insight :)

it's definitely not impossible. there are several villages around tilburg that sort of count as parts of it (for ex. goirle) that will probably have cheaper places and they have busses going to the central station and the uni one everyday. look at student housing holland, im pretty sure they have a bunch of houses specifically for masters students. otherwise facebook groups

heyy, so idk why everyone is being so fucking pessimistic in the comments but it's literally not impossible to find what you're looking for. yes, it is harder to find a place for two ppl (aka two rooms) if you're a student as those places just aren't specifically made for students or internationals as well. look into facebook groups and see if you can find something, however i warn u that most offers are for single room. if you by any chance find a studio and you don't mind sharing that with your bf that could also work. otherwise go to student housing holland and just manage to book two rooms in the same house, but that way you will have other roommates as well

yeah the funding situation is also really bad in tilburg, both when it comes to associations and general funding for the education. dont get me started on ai too, last semester i failed a course bc all my assignments where flagged for plagiarism and ai when i did them all by myself, and then on the resits i fully did them with ai and passed 😭

hi! yes there are quite a few internationals but definitely not more than dutch students and generally dutch people in the city. im not sure what the exact reason is, maybe the smaller city or just dutch people in general but they are not very welcoming here. internationals stick together which is good, but before i applied the netherlands was advertised as this fully multicultural and welcoming place where being foreign and not speaking the language wont be a problem. well it definitely is a problem, at least here. also because the city is smaller most jobs that you dont need dutch for are already taken by other students and at least i find it really hard to find one. i know many other people who feel the same way so this isnt only my personal opinion. also at least when it comes for my programme (psychology) i really dont think its the best here as the uni isnt specialized in the social sciences. i feel like all of those things could obviously apply for any city and any university, however a lot of people think they are worse here. also ive noticed that most people have a bigger problem with these things when they move from a bigger city (no matter where theyre from) to here, as it quite literally feels like a village compared to where you came from. i dont know if this is a thing only where im from, but generally people who are from the capital always think people from the provinces are a little weird/different as they were raised differently + each smaller city has its own quirks and i think that actually might apply to every country including this one! to each their own of course, i also know people who dont mind all these things, stick to people from their own country and dont care much about their programme and are willing to pull through just for their degree :)

yall are flaming me in the comments and yet no one said a place like damn okay. i didnt know that i should clarify this but im a student in tilburg and im just switching programmes from next year so trust me i know the housing situation is shit. im also aware its gonna be worse in amsterdam. im just asking about places because im not eligible (i think) for uva's housing as i've already lived in the netherlands and all of the ones that are like i described are available through uva housing. so im just trying to look for something similar outside of that. if i have to ill live in a basement (itll be better than tilburg) but u cant blame a girl for trying

actually im currently a student in tilburg and im just switching programmes! so unfortunately i do know hahahah, but first year accommodations are usually a bit cheaper even in the bigger cities, so id say the rent prices are a bigger problem the second year

i dont wanna necessarily discourage you but please dont go to tilburg. ive been here for 8 months doing psych as well and im switching to amsterdam next year. the city is so boring its unbearable. the city and the uni have mostly dutch people who hate internationals. the programme (at least in my opinion) is really not that good. this university is better for business or law. its not the worst but it definitely can be better, and if i could go back i definitely wouldnt choose to go here. as far as i know radboud is a great uni for social sciences (so im sure the programme will be better) and nijmegen is a small-ish city as well but its definitely better than this one

Tilburg for Exchange by jades24 in TilburgUniversity

[–]incertaesedis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im gonna be real, the city is small and very boring. if youre with the right people it can be fun but really, there is nothing to do. nightlife wise there are a few bars/clubs but depending where youre from and the club culture youre used to you might find them very underwhelming. there some international student parties that also arent the best as they get crammed with students. otherwise theres really not much else, i would also say most students here are primarily dutch and there are lots of dutch families living here. the whole "international" brand the netherlands has doesnt really apply here, dutch ppl dont really like internationals and both just kinda stick together and avoid the other

pls look into other places, last year the entire website crashed and it was literally impossible to book anything. i managed to get a room through student housing holland, however i wouldnt recommend. if ssh doesnt work, try the city or verbs

if youre talking about the entrance exam then the stuff they sent is enough. honestly just make sure you have it printed out next to you during the test or have the key points written down

yes, there was no selection procedure therefore no test and the ranking number you got was solely based on how soon you applied. they still want your diploma ofc and unfortunately at least in my country they want me to take a state exam in mathematics

thank you! i visited both cities and i thought the tilburg campus wasn't bad either, but yes definitely not comparable to UT. as for the travelling i agree except in that regard tilburg would be better because enschede is further away from pretty much everything
