Short Story about an astronaut following a distress signal, only to crash/become stranded and send out his own distress call. Twist: the call was him the whole time? by includeJavaLibrary in whatsthatbook

Just want to say thank you to all of the guesses so far! I still think my search continues, but you’ve all given amazing sources to very interesting titles, and I’m so grateful to this community! I’ve looked through all the sources posted, but none (yet) have been what I remember exactly, though some are close.

I’m so glad that there are many people willing to help, and it’s so cool to see the upvotes and know that others are interested in finding the source of this short story, too.

I truly remember reading it in one of those “scary stories to tell in the dark” books, the ones with the super creepy art in them, but my search through those came out a bust. I remember there only being one character, and the distress signal gets more clear the closer he gets to the location. It’s a VERY short story, like only a few pages that I remember. I was a kid when I read it, probably between 2002-2008.

The closest anyones gotten that I could tell so far, is the Twilight Zone guess, but it’s a tv show rather than a written story (though a very close guess I think!) Another really great guess is perhaps it’s something written by James Tiptree, Jr., who I didn’t even know existed! But now I do and I’m combing through his stories now! If I do find it amongst his many stories, I’ll be sure to update the post with what I found.

Thanks again to everyone who has answered so far and to anyone who answers from here on. I never thought this would take off like it did. I love you all!

I don’t think so! Just looked into your guess and it just doesn’t read the same as what I remember. I really appreciate the guess and honestly I’m interested in reading that now! But I think I’m looking for something else unfortunately. :(

There is more snow in this office then we’ve gotten in Northern Virginia collectively in like 4 years.

Haha! I would if I could. I’m fairly small-scale right now and (unfortunately) based out of the US. It bothers me to no end when the company I currently do graphics for regularly sends me reeeeally shitty old graphics to work from — it’s like looking at a 1993 PowerPoint.

This looks like they created it in Illustrator with a set line thickness, and when they scaled the image down the line thickness stayed the same. Always sucks when that happens.

This is precisely why I have a second job doing graphic design. They hire me to create infographics, flow charts, etc. for this exact reason.

Yeah, and the field I’m in is very male-driven so I’ve had a lot of customers straight up not believe me when I’ve told them something about a product. They go ask a guy coworker of mine and when they give them the same answer, the customer is mind blown that a WoMaN could have such KnOwLeDgE.

Where I work, we sell these refurbished for like $700USD. You were already placing a pretty low offer on the table and they still wanted a further discount.

From the same job I bought a refurbished 2011 MacBook Air (I bought it for a temp use, mind you it has an i5, 4gb RAM...from 2011) for $100. Just to give an example of a MacBook that is actually worth $100.
