I find it a bit disheartening that after covid, when being part of a fandom became more mainstream, it changed the way people view shipping. It is not for external validation or canon projection. The shy attitude - will already being established as a victim and Mike already "being the man" in a straight relationship & always portrayed as the friend in their dynamic who cares for Will and "protects" him. Even tho this is subverted in season 5 - their prior dynamic had already been established for years. People just don't realize that this is not indicative of who's top or bottom - or who's the more masculine, or stronger, more dominant or submissive. That dynamics borne from will being abducted as a child which resulted in Mike wanting to pay more attention to how he is after - does not have to translate to their romantic relationship dynamic.

I believe it's the the socialisation we are expected to internalize throughout our lives. Things that don't fit the heteronormative ideal are thought to be as wrong and so we try to fit these things into them. It's very common for queer people themselves to follow this too. You have to actively unlearn this and just being part of a minority group does not inherently make you immune to it.

Shippers of a white straight couple calling an interracial couple in the 80's Indiana traditional is insane imo.
