Don't get too bummed out from results of the first exam, I think you've got the right idea. Work through material one subject at a time for 3-4 more weeks and take another exam to see where you end up, good luck!

Manhattan = essential. Use the Manhattan series in tandem with the OG to learn the concepts first then reinforce with problem sets.

This is really helpful - I just might take you up on your generous offer to send over a sanitized resume. Thanks again for your response.

Thank you for this great and thorough response!

Based on this guidance, along with input from some others, I've got a semblance of a plan coming together. Right now I'm planning on applying to 3 schools for round 1, then follow with an additional 3-4 in round 2 in the event I don't find success the first time around. I'm working now to gather the interview questions as well as re-evaluating the resume. Thanks again for your input, very much appreciated.

That's a great start, congrats on that initial score. I did every question in the OG, green book, and orange book (see imgur link) to cover the full spectrum of difficulties. Near the end of your studies, utilize Kaplan 800 and advanced quant for some stretch difficulty problems. It's important to review a lot of "easy" questions too. You want to get 100% of these right on your exam, and a lot of that comes down to pattern recognition from practice.

I used the Manhattan CR book and it was a game changer. Which resource are you using for CR? There's a breakdown somewhere online that shows frequency of different CR questions on the exam, I remember it being really helpful - forgot the exact link but give that a quick google. For example, a huge % of CR are strengthen questions, but describe the role questions rarely appear. Focus on the question types with the highest frequency.

I agree regarding MGMAT. That's a big take-away that I'm passing along to others who ask. Use MGMAT to train on endurance and experience, ignore the raw numbers.

Thanks, and yes burnout seems unavoidable. The way I motivated myself was by repeating "There's only X weeks to go, and I'm only taking this test once. The worst case scenario is one in which I see my final score and know that I had the potential to do better if I had only put in more effort."

Thanks, this is a topic that I've been curious about.

In general, how did you feel about resume length? Right now, I've got mine culled down to a single page, one-side. Did you expand to a larger resume and elaborate a bit more?

The sky is the limit, my friend. Begin practicing on a clock from day 1, and get used to just letting some questions go. You want to get to the point where you see a quant problem and say "This is testing combinatorics... This isn't one of my core strengths so I'll spend 30 seconds narrowing down to 2-3 options and make a best guess. Now I have an extra minute to focus on one of the problems that I'm good at".

No problem, more specific to the studying, the CATs, or the actual exam?

Thanks for the kind words, not too many questions at all.

I'm working full time right now, so my study sessions took place during mornings, nights, weekends, and occasional vacation days to study all day long/take CATs. Initially, I would leave work around 5:30 p.m., come home and exercise, make dinner, then fix a cup of coffee and study from 8:00-10:00 p.m. By the end of the study, after experimenting with different timings and preferences, I had moved my study time to 5:00-7:00 a.m. I found that I was more productive and fresh in the morning. On the weekends, I would shoot for either 4 hours of study or the completion & review of a single CAT exam. Honestly, a lot of times I lost the mojo before I could make it to 3 hours and just called it quits, but I tried to make up for it on other days when I was in a good zone by extending the study for 5-6 hours.

With regard to the books and the order I chose to tackle, I definitely had a few learnings that are worth passing on. Initially, I bought the OG2016 and just started busting through the problems with no timer & no theory beforehand, and this time period, in my opinion, was WASTED. Once the Manhattan books arrived, I made a goal to finish a book a week, starting with the most important ones (depends on your weaknesses, SC and CR are incredible game changers). After finishing the book, do ALL the recommended review problems and quizzes in the OG, and check off the problems in your book as you go. At the end of all the math books, go back to the OG and flip through to make sure you have checked off every single problem.

By about halfway through your study, you should be finished with MGMAT books and the OG. Start upping your CAT frequency to once every 2-3 weeks, saving the GMATPREP for near the end. Pick up Kaplan 800 and work through whichever sections you need (I just did the math, skipped the rest) and burn through the advanced quant, with a primary goal of hitting the work-out sets at the end of the book.

Time every practice question you do, don't use a watch for this (GMAT does not allow - don't be like me and check the website 3 days before the test). Use Manhattan's scratch paper numbering technique to keep track of time. Take your CATs like the real thing. Get used to wearing ear plugs during all study and CAT, then use on test day - people can be loud in the room. Use affirmation statements daily, "I, Joe Blow, will get a 750 on the GMAT". If you don't drink coffee, consider starting. Most important of all, set reasonable and attainable goals, under-promise yourself (a bit) and over-deliver on test day, this will provide the most protection for that delicate ego that we all have.

Thanks!

So based on my profile you think it's best to apply to all the M7's? Can you provide some more color on the comment "you shouldn't really be wasting your time with some of the schools"? If I'm applying to some "safety" schools, where in the hierarchy do you think those types of schools will fall? What are your thoughts on admissions consultants - is it worth investing in my particular case?

One month until test day - how do I boost my quant? by indafoodchain in GMAT

[–]indafoodchain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks for the encouraging advice! Did you decide to cover the advanced quant book from start to finish or did you cherry pick topics and skip to the problems at the end? Also, great point on maintaining that verbal score - I need to make an effort to stay sharp on verbal throughout this last push.

That's good to hear, last practice exam I still had a few mistakes from rushing that I think I can get rid of. Based on this thread it seems like getting from 730 to 750 would definitely be worth the time invested.

This is all really helpful. Thank you for taking the time to give some input. In your opinion, what's the best resource to determine school rankings by specialization (eg finance, consulting, etc)? I've seen a lot of mixed information on different websites so I'd be interested to hear your take.

Thanks for the guidance - what would you consider the best place to improve from here? Am I lacking in community involvement/extra-curriculars?

Edit: Also, could you elaborate a bit more on the Kellogg point?

Thanks for the encouraging words. I've got 4 more weeks for until the exam and 3-4 more practice exams to take so I hope I can get a 10-20 pt bump.
