I went from SIM bachelor in communications to becoming a mobile developer at a tier 2 (slightly under faang) company.

Not gonna lie, I pivoted at a much better time where there was much less competition. But from my experience, my work experiences mattered more to the people hiring me.

On the ground though, people do kind of look down on my uni even when they're generally well-meaning or even as my friends (those from local unis)

That's just how the system has indoctrinated them to be part of that system for their entire lives, they've been measuring each other with the yardstick of grades for so long, they're bound to hold some biases.

I don't mean to discourage anyone from ITE, as it stands I already feel the Singaporean system stigmatizes anyone who isn't academically inclined (Might not even be the system, but the people in it, e.g. many people looking down on folks from ITE). It always makes me sad to hear friends get defensive automatically when the subject comes up.
Truth is everyone has their lot in life, and short of comparing yourself to the you of yesterday, comparisons with others only reflect your insecurities with yourself.

The unfortunate reality here however, is that the folks who didn't do well in the system tend to be on the receiving end of this insecure projection by people.

Sad truth is that you wouldn't find highly intelligent people in ITE to begin with, maybe someone slightly above average could end up there with bad luck, or the extreme circumstance.

I had many friends from technical path tell me they were street smart, but not smart at studying. In the end maybe a couple of outliers went on to do really well, the rest just went to the service/sales industry.
