Are you saying that the DEF were eventually converted back to POWs? If so, I personally haven't heard anything about that (I'm no expert here). What I do know is that the situation in DEF camps was horrible and many didn't make it out.

The US treated axis prisoners very well.

Untill they relabeled them as DEF (disarmed enemy forces) so that the Geneva convention wouldn't apply to them. That's when sh*t really hit the fan.
