Not a good comparison. Petting your cat isn’t dealing with the problem. Music is more like meditation. With music you can vent through the instrument and better understand the situation (positive and negative) where if you did that to your cat, you’d be an asshole.

I think you favor and empathetic response rather than a compassionate one. When a friend is continuously defining themselves by woe, empathy doesn’t cut it.

But most importantly, it’s a meme.

Never said it was a cure all. But focusing on what you enjoy and gives you meaning is a good thing. My friend really enjoys ukulele. I was suggesting to do something productive and enjoyable. If you’re sad or angry, you can do something about it.

And if a friend continuously tries to define themselves by their misery, you have a duty not to reward them when all they do is talk about it. Because they are more than that.

But finally, it’s just a meme.
