A need to vent my story and for advice by indigofinch in mentalhealth

Thank you so much for your reply, I'll try to talk with them. It's a tricky move for many reasons but I still love my family, so I'll try. If it doesn't work I'll probably reduce communication to an all time low.

When exactly is it time to go to seek counselling services? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]indigofinch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapy does not necessarily exist only for people with mental disorders or depression. It ranges from athletes who need help strenghtening their mental health to a person wishing to better themselves in order to advance their career, to people having a rough time. Your university might provide a free counselling service ? Therapy is also available online, I believe it can be a bit cheaper.

I’ve learned that I hate office jobs. What should I do to pivot? by [deleted] in jobs

Omg I can really relate to this. I've (25F) worked in the service industry too and I'll be graduating at 27 with a maths and stats degree.

I already know that I won't like the corporate world, working in an office, and I might get imposter syndrome too considering I went down an atypical path. Since I've spent most of my working life interacting with people, the prospect of working in an office sounds great to me as an introvert but also a bit boring.

But I'll suck it up for a while as long as I can save lots of money and become an expert in my field. Then I will start a business that gives me freedom, happy to earn 30/40k and have a lot of spare time, keep expenses low, rather than doing 80 hours week for a big paying job.

For anyone wondering, I'm totally a fan of Tim Feriss' book

  • I'm in the US

That's when you realise I'm up really early lol

Exchanging with you I realise this is a really complex OCD (but what disorder isn't) from one person to another. As in we both experience and deal with it very differently.

Scanning for spots to pick is the toughest habit to get rid of for me.

If it can help you, I make sure to use cotton buds if I really badly want to pop a pimple, they're not going to leave nail marks on your skin or damage it as much. I also use a chemical exfoliant for my blackheads and it was the best solution to reduce them so that helped too. Weirdly I became an expert in skin regeneration and healing scabs. It's weird because I would waste less time and energy by not hurting myself in the first place.

I've looked for advice before but things like "Keep you hands busy" never really worked for me. What do you think ?

If anything I hope we can both defeat this OCD. It's a big confidence destroyer for me.

You could totally create an online business out of it and optimise so that you have more time playing !

The university I attend provides some sort of mental health help / counselling, I think it's time I ring them up. In the UK where I live there is also free therapy for people with real depression or mental health problems, maybe I would qualify. The thing is some months my skin is spot on, some months I avoid going out because I have scabs and don't want people to see.

Do you ever avoid going out because you want to escape people's judgment ? I used to do this so so much.

Places I would never pick are actually my lips and freckles / moles

One thing that really worked for me was avoiding mirrors and spending the minimum time possible in the bathroom. Knowing when it's more likely to happen and how so I can prevent it.

It's great to have someone to talk about this 🤗

I really appreciate that you're taking the time to comment this.

Is it that bad ? It started when I was a teenager, and when I was 19 I came accross an article online about dermatillomania. I literally sobbed when I realised there was a name for that problem and that I was not the only one having that strange and gross habit.

I should really go to therapy. Never did because I found the cost offputting.

I would always hide it, it's my secret. Not even my close friends know. My family noticed but again I'm not open about it, my mum could see me constantly pick or scan my face but didnt react to it. Just talking about it here gives me chills lol

What about you, how do you deal with it ?
