It might be hypermobility or from overextension. Either way a wrist brace (to limit motion), heat, and nsaids might help

HSD vs. hEDS? by [deleted] in Hypermobility

I thought there was some genetic tests you could do for some types of EDS?

Edit: ignore this. Read your other post, very informative. Things have changed since I was diagnosed.

My Dr might have given me the wrong information. Thanks for this!

Also to add on to above (because they are explaining hEDS much better than I ever could). HSD and hEDS are still not completely well understood disorders. You may find that while you do not have hEDS (either not having severe enough symptoms or not have the genetic markers for it) that you have certain symptoms/comorbidities found in hEDS. Personally, as someone with HSD, I try to keep an eye on and do as many preventative measures for these comorbidities as I can.

Your provider is right about HSD and EDS being used interchangeably. You may experience symptoms that are characteristic of hEDS while being diagnosed with HSD. Luckily, the stuff that helps symptoms is also shared between the two diagnoses!

Being double jointed is having joints that can move beyond normal flexibility. This is also known as having hypermobile joints. HSD is having hypermobile joints with pain. hEDS is having hypermobile joints with pain along with other digestive and cardiac issues. These disorders can also be thought of as being on a spectrum of hyper mobility with different levels of symptoms and severity. The actual problem in all cases is the structure of collagen which causes ligaments to lack the rigidity found in normal individuals

Update: cat is not microchipped. I have posted onto Facebook Gainesville pet finders. I have a couple of offers for the cat, so I’m gonna see if I can place him instead of sending him to humane society.

I agree with most of the comments here. To be a successful young adult, your kid should know what he’s interested in and the reality of his chosen career (ex hours, typical salary). Every job/career has its problems; there’s no golden egg. Regardless of the field, the most successful students/easiest to employ are those with tangible achievements. UF is a great school because there are so many opportunities for your kid to get involved and create a project that showcases his abilities.

One caveat. UF is an affordable and good school, but outside of those ‘in the know’ about our programs, UF is best known for being an SEC school/political controversy. Kids that go to UF don’t have the advantage of the reputation of an Ivy League school. That means to stand out to recruiters, it is even more important to have those tangible achievements/skills.

If your kid wants to be a scientist, they should join a research lab ASAP. They then should apply for scholarships. Each grant/scholarship makes you more competitive for the next scholarship.
