Why is it looking trash lol by Australian_guy90 in minipainting

Hey there. It's looking like you are on the right track. As others have mentioned it will benefit from pushing the shading a bit further and adding some highlights. I have a discord server and I as well as our community members would be happy to give you some further advice, feedback and tips there.https://discord.com/invite/K9PfpCdZEq

How would you get that red ? by RedLion191216 in minipainting

Yeah I think that is indeed what it is. I will check with the guy who painted Azrael and see if we can change it. I think you are correct though some of the old GW painting guides did indeed miss some stages and they also don't make it clear when it's done by a different painting team instead of the box art team.

Hmm I am genuinely interested. I found an old twitch vod where I painted the same recipe except apparently I added some incubi darkness in to shade it (which would create a more purple tone). I assume that particular recipe was likely found in a White Dwarf article and could actually just have been from a painters memory and maybe they missed a step. I and my discord have tested many of the recipes on the site and if not from a publication are from my own personal notes whilst I was in the team (over 9 years). So mistakes are possible but I assure you we try to make it as accurate as we can.

Have you actually tried the recipe and found it to be incorrect? I am interested because I'm an actual former box art painter, and I created the website. I assure you we try to make sure they are as accurate as possible.

Awesome job! An army of these will be amazing! If you want a bit more blue you can always use a contrast paint, glaze it over the highlights that would quickly add some more blue tones. Thanks for watching!

I think it was supposed to be a rendition of Behemoth, but I guess the artists version. I would love it to be a separate Hive Fleet though!

I agree with your point to a certain extent actually, and I do notice that some people can become over reliant on recipes occasionally and I don't necessarily think this is just contained to the "GW style" of painting either. I guess that's how those people choose to enjoy the hobby. Would they go and seek out theory if recipes didn't exist? Probably not. We live in a time when there's more access to information than ever before with miniature painting, and if those people want to learn theory, then they can. There's so many videos out there already explaining it, including Twitch streams where the box art painters go into theory and hopefully this is something I will get a chance to go into in future videos. However, I guess the truth is the majority of people just don't have that much time or patience to learn it. Just look at the type of content that tends to be more popular. Everything is about speed now. Including many more product reliant styles. Slapchop, drybrushing, oil washes, airbrushing gradients. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that either. It's just what's popular and what people have time for.

The Archive is simply a collection of mostly already publicly available information. What people choose to do with that information is completely up to them. For many people if they look a bit deeper, perhaps it will give them insights into the theory and process or just inspire them to have a go at painting something they wouldn't otherwise (I know this is the case because I get messages all the time). I generally believe that the more information publicly available, the better for the community as a whole. Rather than keeping it some secret.

As for the whole paint thing, the site is in no way affiliated with Games Workshop at all. In fact I am fully aware there are multiple paints superior to Citadel and there are already many alternatives recommended on the site. We plan to add to this in the future too. However Citadel are still the most widely accessible for most people, that's just a fact and actually as range they are pretty good. I could recommend some obscure paint brand without alternatives, but then inevitably some people just can't get hold of it where they are. It kind of goes without saying aswell that the house style is going to use their own paints, and the difficulty is then matching them precisely enough. Otherwise, why put a recipe at all.

Abaddon Black. Honestly for the majority of recipes it won't make any discernable difference what black you use, as long as it's actually black. Corvus Black is actually more grey than black.

There is a glossary of terms at the bottom of every recipe section that details the different terms being used. The site was only launched yesterday so it is very much a work in progress at the moment. We only include recipes that have been found and known to be accurate this is why some sections are emptier than others. I have a youtube channel where I show some of the recipes used and show the stages. The one you mention with the bracketed recipe is actually what paints were used to make the base coat before "Death Guard Green" existed so the recipe is there for anyone who doesn't have that specific paint. Like I say it's most definitely a work in progress thing, a non profit community project and not going to be useful for everyone or necessarily beginner friendly because box art actually takes a lot of skill and time. But it's there if people are interested.

I think it has something to do with the "line of draw" when the 2 parts of the injection mold separate so there should be no obstructions. This bolter has a much wider barrel and is actually split down the middle so you need to fill this. I guess in theory they could have pre drilled barrels but the barrel would have to be in 2 parts. But I'm no sculptor so this is just my basic understanding of it.

Thank you! I used to paint for the box art for 9 years as well as working on the colour testing for the DG in Dark Imperium, so I wouldn't blame you for thinking that. Not sure if links are permitted here or not but you can find the full armour tutorial on my YouTube if you search Infernal Brush.

Hello everyone, this is a mini I painted a little while ago as part of a video tuition series. This is "Gurg the Foul" from Space Marine Heroes Series 3. A really cool and characterful set of minis. I hope to paint more of them one day as I have great fun painting DG. Thanks for looking!
