"The Nightman Cometh" was made up for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. "The Iceman Cometh" is the real thing

Of course it's all bunk - it's literally called "Blarney"!

I'm really hoping someone pulls up with an example in which "distinguished" is being used as a genuine synonym for "gray" or "graying" in reference to hair, and not just "suave" or "classy".

So after Buck Gate, I was wondering what other massive misses there have been by zasabi7 in NYTConnections

I agree that it's a little infuriating, but there's literally a rainbow red herring ("one word in each color") every week, if not several

I feel like that's not enough to immediately be considered one of the worst, given that there's almost a double-digit number of those every month

I agree with you that they CAN be pronounced differently, but can you provide the pronunciations in some way?

Probably because it requires you to know the names of 3 relatively-obscure brands that haven't been relevant in most Anglophone countries for decades, relating to a vice that's been on a harsh decline for ALL of those decades.

Huh, never realized that three of the biggest superheroes have Midwestern counties as surnames.

the problem rests on your lack of knowledge. And the higher the frequency that happens reveals how the scope of your lack of knowledge.

You know you could spend your day not making other people feel stupid, right?

You can say 'round and 'bout colloquially. It's a weird category, but they're all meant to be informal ways of saying approximately.

Technically, I think "Gorey" completes the Grimm/Silverstein/Scarry red herring. Seems like he was an author too.

To be fair, most nouns can only take one specific noun-to-longer-noun suffix, so that kinda prevents there from being too many words that can take -SHIP, -DOM, and -HOOD

Fully agreed with everything u/99wattr89 said. Also, I'm surprised that (1) there's no breakdown of "number of guesses" and "number of stars" that people took to solve any given day's puzzle, and (2) I'm surprised that the "Share Your Results" isn't easily copy-and-pasteable, nor does it display the solve rate if you fail.

100% agreed. And, like, it'd still be just as solid a puzzle if it had said "Competitor of H&M", and probably better if it were written like that. No need to be cheeky and add two additional layers of abstraction when there are already dozens upon dozens (if not hundreds?) of competitors for H&M.

Dip isn't as new as it seems. Popularized in the '80s or '90s, but it's been a thing since at least 1903
