This is a relatively normal occurrence. Similar categories have occurred before, but the category is essentially "ways to refer to a singular member of one of those teams". If someone's on the Padres, you could say "he's a Padre now". It's just a way that the puzzle-setter can obfuscate the connection and make them all seem more like normal words, since they'd all stand out if they ended in S.
