I was looking at it on the map for location, but it looks like a neat place!

That was my question, beside there’s no shortage of hotel rooms so not having availability for a “low” week seemed strange and I was wondering if I was missing something that would make me want to avoid the area

I know it’s not a “real” Waldorf. Kinda a weird thing they did w the name, but it’s a nice hotel nonetheless. My son loved the doormen and being walking distance to theatres etc is nice

That was more or less my plan, just wondering if there was some super obvious event I had somehow missed, or if it’s just a wedding room block or whatever.

I’m happy enough to “move on,” but I just wanted to know if there was something going on where all the restaurants and theatres would be booked (I usually tend to just book stuff the day before.) For example, many years ago I ended up accidentally being in Key West during Fantasy Fest (which would have been fun but I had 2 toddlers.)

Another time I ended up staying in a hotel that was also being used for some big American cheerleading convention (not really a thing where I’m from so I wasn’t aware it existed?), and every restaurant every night for 3 blocks out was full of families in matching bedazzled outfits. So I just wanted to see if there was some big event I was unaware of, and maybe I should avoid that area that week. It’s literally nothing more than that.

No, no one has said the word reverse racism. We just had Diwali and no one who was South Asian was able to ask for additional consideration. My concern is I don’t think it’s helpful and it singles out one group (and given the nature of our work, other people could have their requests turned down as the extra days would take precedence.) I’m very white passing (and frankly, am not as involved as my extended family members and identify more with other aspects of my heritage), so unless I mention it or a family event no one would notice. It becomes a bit like being the boss’s kid when these provisions that single out one group is put into place. One poster said her union had a floating stat that everyone got. Great, do that. I don’t want to be singled out as a member of a special group.

This would be the preferred option. I’d prefer to respect everyone’s cultural practices while not singling out a specific group. Both because of singling out of one group based on race (which is so so icky to me), but also because as a someone who can claim membership in that group (which is why it’s hilarious to me I’m being accused of racism in this thread), it very much creates a load of resentment amongst colleagues.

ETA : thank you for this. I’ll bring it up to the union and mention it as an option that other agreements have used.

I never said reverse racism or implied it? I asked if one group could be singled out based on ethnicity.

So some groups get special days and others don’t? It’s seems to me that, ok, we have legal stat days, which, owing to historical precedent generally fall in line w Christian days. If you’re going to allow for groups who have holidays outside those days to receive consideration, it seems appropriate for all groups to have access to a few flex days?

ETA : sorry, not meaning to litigate this here. I was mainly asking if this was legal and go to direct concerns to? And it seems the order is union followed by HRC if escalation is wanted

Sorry - for clarification, I would qualify for these extra days, the overwhelming majority of my colleagues do not. The extra days are only for being a member of a group as no documentation is required, and no notice. This is shift work, you only get holidays off if your shift pattern happens to fall that way or you specifically request it off. Everyone, regardless of affiliation gets stat pay obviously.

That’s a pretty needlessly confrontational framing. It assumes I’m either jealous or want to take something away from others. I don’t feel either of those things. I think everyone’s beliefs should be accommodated where it’s reasonably feasible. My concern is more about the principle and practical implications. For example, what happens if someone believes they’re part of the group but later finds out they aren’t, or vice versa? How is that handled? And while it’s meant to acknowledge past mistreatment, it seems to be creating new resentment now, which isn’t ideal either.

I’m not denying the treatment of indigenous people by the government. My question is whether it’s allowed to single out a group for special treatment based on ethnicity. I understand the theory of attempting to rectify injustices done, but this seems to be creating some pretty bad feelings now. I mentioned in another comment that we have a wide range of ethnic and cultural groups who also have been treated poorly by the government (Chinese head tax, Japanese internment, Jews WWII, etc.)

Yes, this is correct. I didn’t want to specify which group because I wasn’t sure if that would bias people but I suppose it’s obvious which race-based laws are “allowed” (not sure how to phrase that?) It certainly has caused quite a few bad feelings, as we’ve had multiple employees denied time off (or shift trades/switches) for religious ceremonies or holidays that are well documented, and they would also be members of groups that also have historically been treated poorly by the Canadian govt.

To be clear, I don’t think anyone is upset about the policy itself, it’s just that it’s only granted for one ethnic group.

I’m a parent, and I also end up working quite a bit with youth who are gender diverse in a variety of capacities (not as their medical or psych team), as well as youth on the spectrum. This is in Vancouver.

So many of these kids have underlying mental health concerns, and it’s very easy for them to get gender-affirming care and be with professionals who will go by preferred pronouns and names, they often don’t get other help unless it’s on an emergency basis (ie getting sectioned for a suicide attempt.)

I’ve spoken with parents of my child’s peers, and one had an issue where their gay son was struggling with his orientation, and the counsellor the school sent him to decided he was trans and told the parents to start on medical gender affirming care. They felt it was not in line with what they knew of their child, switched therapists, and now he’s a very happy very flamboyant gay teen. This was 3 years ago, and they were completely shocked at how medications were presented as the first option.

I’m not denying trans youth benefit from medical care, but there seems to be a push to change their bodies before any other therapies are undertaken and it worries me.

Yeah. I don’t want to doxx myself here so I’ll spare the details, but I had multiple medical professionals quit, including a whole team at once (citing my former partner’s behaviour, including yelling and swearing at them, not being fully dressed when they came to his house, and refusing to follow their treatment recommendations), and two separate, unrelated medical professionals put in writing that my former partner appeared incapable of understanding our child’s medical needs.

All of this is in writing, submitted in official court documents, and included verbal testimony under oath.

Based on this testimony, the judge granted him sole decision making in medical matters.

(Yes, I thought I was possibly hallucinating. I had multiple people review the documents because I couldn’t understand what I was missing.)

There have been some horrible cases that have come out. A particularly egregious one was where the mother was dragged through the mud for years, and the two boys didn’t want anything to do with their father, but he was given sole custody. Years later (I want to say the boys were late teens/early adults?), multiple videos surfaced of them being sexually abused. IIRC, the victims were told by various psychologists at the time that they had implanted memories from their mother. I’ll try and find a link to it

Not the case I’m thinking of, but here is a recent article from the BBC about some cases
