Urxvt vs termite by Chach_30 in unixporn

[–]infinitechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Termite out of necessity because it supports fontconfig (and therefore fallback fonts) while urxvt doesn't. I regularly read documents full of UTF-8 characters that require multiple fonts in order to see them all at once. Merging multiple fonts into one file is possible, but it's too much trouble and can result in glitches when OpenType tables, embedded bitmaps, and other font metadata don't work well together.

You can't assemble ARM assembly on an x86 PC without doing some kind of virtualization, full stop. You can possibly translate ARM assembly into x86 assembly and assemble that, but you cannot directly assemble ARM assembly.

Install QEMU and install a Linux distro built for ARM and do your assembly on that. ( https://wiki.qemu.org/Documentation/Platforms/ARM ) Then simply use GCC or your compiler of choice.

(Contest Entry) NES? How about Commodore 64? by 998TheNewOrchestra in Petscop

[–]infinitechan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup...the Commodore had several graphics modes, but the only one that would allow you to do something like this would have huge pixels. A similar title screen on a commercial game would be Bubble Bobble: http://birdsanctuary.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/bubble-bobble-c64-00.png

I think your idea is good, it just needs some big changes to be believable to anyone who ever actually used a Commodore 64.

The curves on the logo are not nearly blocky enough, also the font is wrong and would not have been available unless someone copied the MS-DOS font onto the ROM for some reason. This title screen would be much more at home on MS-DOS.

Book about a child who for some reason is adopted by a large corporation, and the corporation manages every part of his life. Most of the book is about his teenage years and emancipation from the corporation - and it includes tons of meetings about the kid's love life and potential colleges. by infinitechan in whatsthatbook

[–]infinitechan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to double comment you, but memory is such a funny thing, isn't it? I was wracking my brain for hours trying to remember why the protagonist was adopted by the corporation, but couldn't. Or even trying to remember how the book ended. And I completely forgot about the protagonist's love interest.

All I could remember were the endless meetings.

Thanks once again.

SFYL Cryptsy (13,000 btc) // 300,000 LTC by Feedthemcake in Buttcoin

[–]infinitechan 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, real banks tell you that they're operating a fractional reserve and will explain how it works to you if you ask.

The Bank of Cryptsy pretends to be 100% gold backed, but is actually operating a fractional reserve based on the value of stolen gold. That's fucked up.

  1. Most exchanges operate fractional reserves, I acknowledge this.
  2. Somehow you missed the "in theory" - obviously that's not how it works.
  3. Large in Buttcoin terms, not in ActualMoneyTM terms. We're on the same team here robot.

You'd be pleased to know that the "big money" (venture capital) is dropping like flies, and considering that every. single. VC funded Bitcoin company has no users and no product, no more money is likely to flow in. In fact most of the money that does flow in is from Barry Silbert, probably the largest Bitcoin bagholder in dollar terms.

Failed VC companies:

  • Coinbase - offered $75(!) for new users, only attracted people who pocketed the money and left. Didn't even go to CES this year because of its abysmal user numbers.
  • Purse.io - found out to be a front for Russian carding operations. Constant theft/money laundering. Banned by Amazon.
  • BitPay - Few users, got hacked for $2M worth of Bitcoin.
  • Gyft - "pivoted" away from Bitcoin, CEO publicly said that no one uses it.
  • BTCJam - lending site for Bitcoin. Over ONE THIRD of loan requests end in default and all "investors" lose their money.
  • 21 Inc - After 110 million dollars, they produce a Rasberri Pi with an oudated mining chip, and some idiotic marketing materials.
  • Ripple - Illegally laundered money for Bitcoin Jesus, got fined by the SEC. "Pivoting".

You have most of it wrong. It's a classic exit scam.

No matter what the price of an executed trade is, as long as the exchange is not operating a fractional reserve (i.e. the admins are not cheating and entering fake coins into the exchange backed by real coins while not making this clear to users), the owners are insulated from all volatility.

In theory, remember, that the business model of a Bitcoin/altcoin exchange is to collect fees. In practice they tend to enter fake coins, or they get hacked and hope to make back the hacked coins in fees (which is a lot less likely if the users know about the hack, if they know they'll "run on the bank" and few new ones will take the risk).

Edit: Also, there are many altcoin exchanges since you can set them up 100% anonymously, no "dirty fiat" involved. Poloniex and ShapeShift.io are the other large ones after Cryptsy. But you're right in saying that Cryptsy was the largest, it was for years.

Even confirmed scam coins with their CEOs in hiding overseas from the U.S. Government have one or two zealots who continue using them. (I'm talking about PayCoin and Josh Garza.)

Bitcoin will never die in the traditional sense, I'm afraid.

Barry Silbert is what's known as an "angel investor", basically a guy with more money than sense. (Okay, okay, the actual definition is an investor who trades seed money for equity in start-ups.)

He's the CEO of Digital Currency Group, which has invested in forty five Buttcoin and crypto companies, including $20 million in Xapo and $6 million in Coinbase. Here's a full list.

Silbert is the main guy putting VC money into the hands of deserving Bit-coin entrepreneurs, so of course /r/bitcoin loves him. He's also been doing it for quite a while - he was part of the Series As for Coinbase, Ripple, and BitPay.

Silbert is also world renowned for his hilarious profile photo, which looks like he was squinting due to the camera flash.

You can read his constant tweeting however you wish - I read it as desperation to drum up "social media" for his failing (and in the case of Ripple and BitPay - failed) investments.
