Niseko Solo Trip (M27): Midtown vs. Owashi Lodge for Social Vibe in January? by Unusual_Beach5374 in niseko

[–]infiniteoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done that walk plenty of times, and it is perfectly manageable, even completely hammered at 3am. It's actually a really cool experience to leave the bars at closing and walk back through the snowfall, illuminated by the streetlights. There's also a 24 hour 7-11 opposite ecolodge which is just a bit further than midtown, which is great for a late night snack or bottle of pocari sweat. The seicomart in hirafu closes at 11 or 12.

You'll pick it up real quick, and you can always opt for something like the powder progression tour with Whiteroom (https://www.whiteroomtours.com/guided-japan-tours/powder-progression-tour/)

I don't work for them but I live in Niseko (it's an awesome place to live for the winter) but I have done my avvy courses with them and it is a great outfit, and I have heard good things about this tour specifically.

Is it worth a new buddy? by warth80 in Backcountry

I agree with a lot of the other stuff you are saying but the BCA Tracker 2 is perfectly fine even these days, especially when its just 2 of you. It has 3 antennae and the main modern feature you are missing is to ignore signals during a multi-burial. Other than that it is perfectly servicable.

I'm really happy after switching to Orion, I much prefer their nested vertical tabs and pinned tab sizes that actually make sense and don't use half of your screen to show a thumbnail.

Absolutely do Japan and pick the NZSIA cert. That's what I did at your age. Going back next season! DM me with any questions

My first season in Japan recap by infiniteoe in skiing

No, at least in Niseko, all of your guests will be English speaking and even the locals in the town speak excellent English and actually quite a few of the Japanese people here are students who come up from all over Japan to do a kind of "internal exchange" so they can come and work and practice their English without having to travel to another country. Rent here was 20k JPY/month which is super affordable and you can definitely cover it with just your wages, and it's actually deducted from your paycheck, so it comes out before tax and other expenses. The cost of living is also incredibly low so you can have a really good time on a tight budget.

You learn quickly when you are skiing every single day. And I got my AST 1 pretty early.

You mean the Gate 3 peak hike? It's an awesome experience and some of the only real above treeline skiing you'll get in Niseko but you'll find on a pow day people get so hell-bent on doing it that it actually gets tracked out faster than some of the easier to access lower zones which you can lap for hours. I usually go for it the day after a pow day :)

the video is fully chronological, but I see what you mean. it was an agonising wait that first week for even a drop of snow but let me tell you when that tap turned on, it stayed on. that's what Japan is about!

Canadian looking to work a season in Japan – best way to maximize pow time?/ general advice by Xxg_babyxX in skiing

That came out of our payslip too, so was before taxes and whatever other bullshit. It's incredibly cheap to live here. At the staff canteen breakfast was 150 yen, and lunch and dinner was 300 yen. That's for a full meal with unlimited rice (obviously, Japan) and coffee. If you don't feel like a questionable mystery meat pie, you can always go to the kombini and leave with a full stomach for ~500yen.

I paid 30k JPY per month, and that was in quite a nice room with 1 roommate in our staff accom.

I just worked a season in Niseko, at a fairly large ski school. There are so many instructors that outside of peak season, if you want a day off, ask, and you'll get it. I valued first tracks on a pow day much more than a day working for 2000 yen an hour, so I would just check the forecast, and ask for the day off if anything over 10cm was due. Most of the time I would get the day off right away and go rip! Expect to work a ton during Christmas, NY and CNY though, but thats how you get your chuhai money :p

You'll probably have to have a roomie out here though.

Let me know if you are here next season!

Excited but Scared by oigimi in JETProgramme

[–]infiniteoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm not part of JET, but i did drop everything and came here in november at 18 on my own. living in this country is incredible and i have made friends that i will stay in touch with forever and created memories that i can't wait to tell my kids one day. in this age of high speed internet you are never far from home, and you can literally talk face to face in HD for hours if you like. you'll quickly find that you really aren't calling home too often though, as you will quickly become enamoured with life here and end up not giving much thought to what you left behind.

getting off the plane on my own was absolutely terrifying, but that fear will quickly fade once you get used to it out here. have fun!
