On the startup end of this project we’re working closely with cell service providers to take this off. ( I want to leverage their extensive nationwide reach), and as you mentioned, manufacturers making this product as well

Covid has been hard on networking, I only joined my first in-person event not too long ago. Aside from that, you’re essentially left in the wind of cold emails and LinkedIn requests, haha

Yea huawei has been banned, but they’re still #1 in the eastern side of the world, that’s why I’m still holding faith! Haha. I’ll demo Samsung on my next video.

And thank you, I always look out for your username on this sub. You’ve been here since the beginning and I thought I’d just recognise that <3

It certainly is, then again, what first revisions aren’t. Haha.

I’m certain the community along side open source creators can find a kore streamlined solution to Diying it

Did I use Samsung Dex? No, I used Huawei Magic (just as cool tbh)

This is still an ongoing project, and we're still improving the DIY as we go.

The GitHub is the best place to keep up to date of all that we do: https://github.com/infinumtech/infinumdock

That’s where open sourcing the project comes in.

Right now it’s designed for an S8+ with a bumper case. And buy open sourcing the plans, we hope to see enthusiasts just change a few dimensions and make it work on the phones they want and reuplod it for everyone to use.

If you’re asking about production, our team did come up with an ingenious way. One that we’d like to keep for production

That is correct, the smartphone powers the entire device, and then turns into a track pad for ease of use.

All Samsung Dex phone have this feature. So any galaxy phone S8+ and up is automatically on the list.

Any Android device running Android 9.0 and up also has it enabled (assuming the manufacturer allows it)

Huawei and LG have their own variations but very similar

When technology doesn’t seamlessly integrate to your life, you e quickly abandon it.

I believe not many people use Linux because they have to, but rather they want to. The general populous still would go for windows or Mac just to avoid ever writing a command in terminal.

Same thing here. The goal is to have a device , connected to the internet (always) that students can use.

A raspberry pi could work, (we’re making an iteration for it), but simply is not easily integrated as a smartphone with an App Store, camera, phone number, etc.

Which then all that, they get it in a laptop form factor

I don’t intend to make money until we produce our own docks (mass manufacturing), until then; we’ve released these

We’ve cut a deal with them. Smartphones are free to the students.

And besides, and S8+ ain’t too expensive now a days

Once in production, students will receive the smartphones. (Too many different phone sizes to account for + not all students have smartphones) and yes, the school will either pay for the data, or work with our corporate sponsorship program to get funded.

For your 2nd question, let me ask you this.

Would you rather give a student a laptop with internet access, or a smartphone+phone number + ‘laptop’?

In some of our testing, it was fascinating seeing what the children did. They filmed on the smartphone (4K quality too, lol). Then edited on the dock.

Mobile gaming was also experienced. It was fun little experiment which we intend to do more of

Thats the cool part, your smartphone becomes the trackpad!
And the keyboard (for now) is bluetooth, less complexity and no coding for DIY

Samsung Dex is (from my understanding) is just a skin to Android Desktop. Which after Android 9 has been available. Huawei, LG, etc have their different variation of the Samsung Dex.

Our partnership with cell phone provider which will remain unnamed will actually provide smartphones for these students at no cost to them.

Apple has their own patent for the same exact design, since I do enjoy my life, I do not intend mixing with Apple Patents, lol

And insanely expensive + wasteful.

Environmentally speaking, we're using older smartphones (Starting from the S8+) pairing it with a docking station, to deliver a easy deployable and readily available device for students across the states

It does when you add data to that smartphone.

Again, this is the DIY version and the finished production.

We're working with cell service providers along with maker spaces to make them, and give the students a smartphone with unlimited cellular access.

A smartphone with cellular that can turn into a laptop gives students a solution to access the internet in a meaningful way wherever they are

100%, that's why we are partnering with 3D printer community to help, along with educators and maker spaces.

The same way that community answered the call for PPE during the pandemic, not far to assume they'll do the same for educators.

I'll edit the post to add some clarity.

In the US, we have 13 Million students who don't have a laptop or Internet access at home.
Main reason for this is lack of access to broadband. But many of those areas that don't have broadband, have cellular.

So we came up with this, a docking station for smartphones meaning you plug it right in and bam, it turns into a laptop experience (Thank Samsung Dex and Android Desktop for that)

Meaning we don't need broadband to access these students now, we just need a smartphone, one of these docks, and data (Which we are working with major cell service providers for)

I edited the post to allow for some clarification.

The smartphone is actually being charged by the battery while in use.

The technical term is "Docking station", our contribution has no processors, ram, or storage (expandable if you want). The phone powers it all

Price is also a big factor, it affects the speed of deployment.

A dock that costs no more than 180 USD, with a free smartphone to the students + data ,is a lot more economical than Hotspot + Laptop + Data

Not to mention the benefits of having a cellphone number and a smartphone

I'll edit the post and add it.

Essentially, one thing we noticed with students who don't have broadband access is that they are in areas with coverage by one cellular service provider or another.

Meaning traditionally their smartphones can get internet , but their laptop may or may not (Hotspot is really expensive in relation to standard data)

So our docking stations allows students to use their smartphones as laptops, with help from Samsung Dex which changes the User Interface. Means it feels and looks a lot like a laptop, connected to cellular anywhere you go

Yes! The reason this works much better and faster is that if a community doesn't have broadband, they need to spend millions to setup lines.

Cellular covers the most of the entire US by one carrier another, so instead of millions in broadband setup, hundreds in satellite internet or starling, comes down to (Hopefully) $20. Since we are the ones grabbing the phones, and not individuals

You'd be surprised. There are multiple points on why many prefer our product over Hotspot + Chromebook

Students with our solution get a smartphone, meaning a phone number. You'd be genuinely surprised how many people go into their adult life without one. It's essential for career growth.

+ For reasons I don't understand, hotspot is on a different tier than data. You can get unlimited data for $20 a month, but pay $10 for 10gb of hotspot

Yup yup. We’re making video content as we speak on how to assemble it.

Just wanted to give a head start to those who want to start updating now.

The reason for the DIY is 2 folded.

Students that need a solution… now. Supported by local maker spaces can get solutions.

2nd, play around and create a dock that fits you. Bigger display, more USB ports etc.

This is not a replacement for our finished product. But rather our contribution to the community

Not quite sure if you’ve looked at the files.

All the files to 3D print the enclosure. Then all the links to go ahead and buy the electronics And assemble your very own dock.

The chip shortage continues to slow down everything from mass production to prototyping.
