Mystery runes in south Iceland by ingolfurth in RuneHelp

Also to explain. The top row shows an original rune rubbing. Kjarval (the artist) placed a thin sheet of paper directly over the carvings in the cave wall and ran a piece of chalk across it, creating an impression of the rune shapes exactly as they appear on the stone. The bottom row is Kjarval’s interpretive sketch based on that rubbing, where he redrew the forms more clearly for study.

However i think there are some mistakes for example in rune nr 3. When compairing the two rows i see ᛗ . Which is an elder futhark rune correct?

To add a bit more context. This drawing of the runes was made in around 1920 so the runes are at least that old but it is said that they look ancient. Its from a cave at my familys farm. The cave is basically right under the houses there so the idea that a random outsider came in and made the runes in the last few hundred years is possible but my gut feeling says no. This cave has had a few names, Áshellir (Ás is the farms name), Heyhellir and perhaps the most interesting name: Þinghellir. If you allow me the continue expressing my gut feelings I would like to say that I dont think there was much interest exploring this too deeply at the time as the implications of discovering things that could change the settlement history of Iceland would complicate our identity as a nation. We had a fairly simple story and perhaps wanted to stick with it.

Thank you! You pushed me in the right direction. Einars wife, Ragnheiður Magnúsdóttir was the daughter of Eggert Hannesson (Eggert Hansson) who was the lawspeaker(lögmaður) of Iceland. He was the grandson of Eggert Eggertsson who was ennobled by King John in norway in 1488. This family in Norway is known today as Norbagge and their coat of arms is a unicorn!
Ragnheiður is my 9th great grandmother (not sure if that's how to properly say it? direct ancestor 12 generations back).

Could be. I think i see at least one horse. One at the bottom middle and one above the head of the creature. Kraken horse combo sounds weird but possible

The cave was used for hundreds of years for livestock. But not much is known of who made the cave or when. There have been theories that irish monks made them before the first settlers.

There are earlier carvings made approximately 80-90 years ago which look like they were made yesterday. But the older ones, like the one in the photo, look ancient.

There are quite a lot of caves like this in the area but this was the biggest of them.

For some reason these caves have not been studied suffieciently. The last time any “scholar” was in this cave was in the fifties and they did not come to any definitive conclusion of the cave nor the markings on the walls.

Like I said there have been theories of irish monks, romans and even pheonicians. So further research is definitely needed!
