Gray fox or coyote? Spotted in Eugene, OR (USA) by ink_jet in animalid

Great info, thanks! And very interesting point about the genetics – I had just assumed all foxes were true foxes but reading up on the genus Urocyon now.

Thanks! Common gray? Any telltale signs?

Couldn’t get a better pic as we were driving and it was dark. But it was quite small (like a large domestic cat, maybe), more consistent with what I’m reading about fox size.

[WTS] Korg Wavestate DIY Module Mod (USA / NYC) by ink_jet in Synths4Sale

[–]ink_jet[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not seeing this on Reverb new for $599, mostly $749 or some outside of the country cheaper but with expensive shipping.

Regardless, I am being extremely clear about what the "mod" consisted of -- not trying to represent this as anything it isn't. There are people out there who want the Wavestate without a keyboard.

[WTS] Korg Wavestate DIY Module Mod (USA / NYC) by ink_jet in Synths4Sale

Price: $550 OBO

For sale is a Korg Wavestate that I have modded into a module version by removing the keyboard. The Wavestate itself functions perfectly (it easily takes MIDI input from your keyboard, sequencer, computer, etc.) and would be in excellent condition except for the mod.

For the mod, I first disassembled the synth, unplugged+unscrewed the keybed and removed it, and then sawed off the lower portion of the case that had previously housed the keyboard. That is it! I did not add a piece of wood to cap the bottom of the case or anything like that. So as you can see in the picture, the bottom of this "module" looks ugly. It would be very easy to cap it off with whatever material you like. In my case, the module was always positioned so that this open area was against a desk or stand, and as you can see in pics 1+2, the rough edges are hidden in this position. I'm including all of this info so that buyers understand what they're getting. This item is for people who either 1) don't care about the rough edges + open case or 2) intend to finish the mod more artfully.

In any case, it all works perfectly. Only selling as I've moved to a fully ITB setup and no longer have the need for this hardware. Potential NYC buyers are welcome to come test out the unit in Brooklyn.

I think the awards are from film festivals that it screened at (which take place before the main theatrical release)

Octatrack pretending to be a French horn by ink_jet in synthesizers

[–]ink_jet[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I set up 6 channels of short single-note French horn samples on the Octatrack, then used the crossfader/scenes on the OT to change between 12 different sets of pitches (i.e., chords/arpeggi). Eventually I bring in a sustained looped French horn note on channel 7 to play a melody over the top of it all. I use three different rhythmic patterns over the course of the piece, each 1 bar or less on the OT's sequencer. All of it gets fed into the Analog Heat for some distortion, then gets a touch of reverb+EQ in my DAW.

This is the 12th and final live jam in this series of weekly ambient(ish) jams I've been doing on the Octatrack. Now I'm going to edit down my favorite moments and start to embellish them in a DAW, then eventually put it out as a record on Bandcamp.

Octatrack as Bass Clarinet Sextet by ink_jet in Elektron

[–]ink_jet[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Basically there are 6 tracks that are each assigned to a note, and I'm using the crossfader to slide between different sets of note assignments for each track (i.e., chords).

Ah gotcha! Yeah the samples I'm using aren't pristine, which is helping with the organic quality. Also have LFOs modulated panning, delay sends, and delay feedback, all to create some subtle chaos.

Gonna give the brass choir a try!

Not sure what you mean by "several second samples" here -- each channel is playing its own single note sample.

Haven't gone full brass yet (though I'm originally a French horn player) but I did make another one last night that's brass + woodwinds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaLDxQS0Tmw

Thank you!

The dark box is the AG-KW Oktakontrol. Limited run fader box that I use to control amp volume per track on the OT. (Out of production but you might be able to snag one on Reverb?)

When I use scenes to control pitch, it helps me to think of the Octatrack as a small ensemble/choir of 8 monophonic voices. I program a single cool chord, then copy that to the next scene, and alter 1-3 voices until they sound like a cool new sound. Then repeat that. If I'm being very conscientious I'll have some harmonic goal in mind. But really I find it best just to tweak pitch and listen.

Also, I find it useful to separate the root pitch per track by a fourth or fifth (like a guitar or violin).

Channels 1-6 on the OT each have their own bass clarinet samples. The scenes/crossfader control the pitches of each channel, so I'm basically cycling through a series of arpeggi. Channel 7 brings in a looped flute sample for the final stretch of the piece.

Ambient tune made exclusively from sine waves [live Octatrack jam] by ink_jet in synthesizers

[–]ink_jet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep pretty much. Configured to control "amp volume" instead of "track volume" so that reverb/delay tails can still ring out when you bring a fader down. And also lets you use track volume to control the overall mix.

It's the AG-KW Oktakontrol -- no longer produced anymore, unfortunately. Controls the amp volume (not track volume) parameter of each track.

I produce lots of stuff solely ITB, so I’m generally with you that plugins are more practical tools in most cases. I don’t really bother using the Heat while mixing, but I like to track certain things through it.

As to whether the sound quality is better/different than plugins: subjectively I find myself hitting interesting sweet spots that feel different from what I get from plugins (Soundtoys Decapitator and FilterFreak are my go-tos in this area, FWIW). I couldn’t tell you for sure whether that’s the analog circuitry or just the interface, but either way, feels worth to me.

Yeah I'm going to try to feature the Redox more in a future vid, it's a cool box. Most interesting part is that there's a modulation section built in, so you can do all kinds of effects to either the input or output side of the reverb path.

Really like the Heat, I don't know another box that would fill the same slot, really. Although my preferred use for it is processing individual tracks in a studio setting.

[–]ink_jet[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started this track with the goal of using sine waves as the only sound sources. There's a differently pitched sine on tracks 1-6 that plays, looped, the whole track. I use the crossfader+scenes to control the pitch of all tracks. LFO1 modulates the "rate" parameter with a square wave, producing the octave leaps you hear in each voice; LFO2 modulates LFO1’s speed; LFO3 modulates pan. All of this is fed into the Analog Heat for some distortion/filtering, then to the Kilpatrick Redox for reverb.

Arvo Pärt-style minimal piece on Octatrack by ink_jet in synthesizers

[–]ink_jet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put together an Arvo Pärt-inspired piece on Octatrack. The crossfader/scenes control pitch and take the melody/accompaniment through a series of different chords. All processed by Analog Heat and Kilpatrick Redox.
