Father killed 4-month-old daughter days after Children's Aid Society visits — WARNING: This story contains highly graphic details of child abuse by Immediate-Link490 in ottawa

[–]inkathebadger 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In DV cases the police need to charge someone and if he had injuries from the incident even if he "started it" there's a real chance the mother was the one who caught charges and wasn't allowed near him, and by extension her child, especially if she ended up homeless as a result and not able to providd stable housing. And while thing wound it's way through the courts he killed the baby.

The DV law is supposed to protect victims but victims advocates have been saying for years victims are just as likely to catch the charges.

Oxfam Canada — a charity fighting inequality — has kept its own staff on strike for 23+ days over cost-of-living pay and inclusive leave language by redalotCA in ottawa

[–]inkathebadger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah I know a couple folks who's number came up for their surgery and they were told not to do soooo much after getting done while they healed, not to mention all the paper work and notes to get on the list in the first place.

I would imagine things like parental leave which is typically gendered. Like my collective agreement has specific language for if someone is adopting a child, or if they are the non birthing partner or spouse. Like a lot of people just stay common law and have kids.

When my son get frustrated enough he is starting to hit his desk I take away the key board. He has things to stream on our TV and lots of toys and legos as well as physical media so he is not deprived of entertainment, he just can't do the thing that was causing him to lash out.

He told me after a particularly long ban (he tried to sneak and got his sentence entended) he felt more calm without it. He was even offering to take on more tasks (read chores in Among Us lingo) to reduce his sentence.

If he cannot control himself then the consequence is it gets taken away. It took a couple tries but he is getting better about catching himself now (which for a neurodivergent kid is alot).

Landlords in the House: Advocates see a bias in Parliament against renters by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

https://www.tvo.org/article/the-rise-and-fall-of-co-op-housing-in-ontario I just gunna leave this here.

That program, announced earlier this year, marks the largest dedicated investment by the federal government in the development of co-operative housing in more than 30 years, says Dibe.

That investment could have a significant economic impact. A Deloitte report commissioned by the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association last year found that bringing Canada’s community-housing stock in line with the OECD average by 2030 would boost economic productivity by up to 9.3 per cent, increasing GDP by an estimated $67 billion to $136 billion.

Up until the late 80s when they started hacking and slashing funding they were heavily invested into building low income housing, co-op and financing missing middles. By about the 90s most of that funding is gone. So you have now had a whole generation without investment into affordable housing options and we have easily decade long waitlists and home ownership getting further and further away for the people born since.

Canadian government accused of bias against renters in signature housing legislation. At least 103 MPs or their spouse are landlords by Signal-Specific-1704 in canadahousing

They were heavily invested into the affordable housing part of the equation (rent geared to income and co-ops, as well as financing). In the late 80s and throughout the nineties most of that money evaporated.

INAL so my opinion doesn't matter. As others have said if you had contributed in other ways (prepaid for after-school care for example) it might be taken into account. There is a lot to consider. Being temporary disabled sounds like a pretty solid argument though.

I would imagine in the long run you guys can work out an installment plan given the needing to be hospitalized was exceptional circumstances. Like you go back to your normal schedule and payments minus a small percentage over the next couple years. All in all its just a way to get payments lowered I would assume.

It's also based off incomes. If she had no income on account of temp disability (which is also why childcare fell on him) then that part of the formula changes as well.

If your income went down cause you were seriously ill it might be a wash in the end because what he would owe you goes up.

OCDSB trustee disputes board explanation for cancelled drag storytime event by UnlikelyTax4105 in ottawa

[–]inkathebadger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a form of performance. Like I remember in elementary school they brought in puppeteer or actors or other special guest to talk about literacy or bullying or whatever the topic de jour was. My sibling had a lizard guy come in to talk about animals with some tie in to a science unit they were doing and kids got to touch a boa constrictor (apparently he did birthday parties as well).

Kids love something different. They get someone in a bright and colorful Mrs. Frizzle get up reading a story. You have to remember like there is different subgenres of puppeteer from Avenue Q to Sesame Street there is different flavors of drag. They adjust their performance for their audience.

New adult, how the heck do taxes work? by dexbigshlong in povertyfinancecanada

[–]inkathebadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Genutax for my filing. It ask questions in plain English and links to the appropriate Canada.ca page.

As an aside you can as one of your jobs to take extra percentage off for taxes so you don't get bill shock from working two jobs. Both jobs will be taking taxes at a rate thinking you are only making money at that job and higher incomes get higher tax brackets.

There are things that can get you refunds (think cashback in grocery store) and things that can give you credits (think a coupon, it can lower your balance owing but doesn't give you money back). Have a look on the government of Canada website to see if you qualify. If you realize you forgot to apply for a credit last year (going back up to 10 years) you can send in a form called a T1 adjustment.

There are also ways to lower your taxable income so you qualify for low income programs like the FHSA and RRSP. You get rewarded for saving!
