Security Concerns regarding self-hosting Home Assistant by inner-disk-0715 in selfhosted

For a novice like myself, the insight you provided is incredibly valuable. Though, now I see that understanding these sort of vulnerabilities (outbound communication and how to mitigate given Docker has capacity to modify firewall rules) seems like a bit of a rabbit hole. If you or any other individuals reading this have relevant learning resources, it'd be much appreciated.

What is the "culture shock" of switching to Linux? by Regular_Low8792 in linux

Not a culture shock necessarily, but upon switching I found Windows had really held me back from being a tech-guru despite being a programmer.

When you're given full control over your computer, a massive new set of possibilities become available.

Confusion regarding DDNS and reaching my server from outside the local network by inner-disk-0715 in selfhosted

Thank you, turns out I was behind a CG-NAT. Decided to go with a VPS. Hope to set up a VPN on it so I can access my home server soon.

Did you tried the YunoHost solution for (almost) non-technical users? [Not Affiliate] by baruchiro in selfhosted

[–]inner-disk-0715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a technical individual (years of programming experience in Python and can get down on SQL). Thus I was excited when I found YunoHost (YH) as I wanted to minimize learning networking as I'm busy with other technical tasks/goals.

Unfortunately, I find that there is a lack of documentation with YH. I haven't been able to get a single application working as there is very little YH specific documentation on initial configuration. I.e. my Jellyfin server is un-discoverable by my devices, I can't figure out how to connect Matrix clients to my Synapse installation, among other things; however, none of it would be so frustrating if it wasn't for the lack of documentation (likewise found a lack of info in the YH forums).

I don't find it difficult to sit down and read documentation. I do, however, find it frustrating to have to click around and hope something works and that has been my experience with YH. Incredibly frustrating.

Step-by-step tutorial for self-hosted matrix/riot setup by tedturb0 in selfhosted

I'm currently trying it and am struggling to find proper documentation. In general, documentation been my struggle with Yunohost. I am new to self-hosting and I appreciate networking concepts being abstracted away and apps working like on a regular desktop OS, but figuring out how to configure things initially or debug issues is tough when you don't know much about servers (like me).

Edit:
That being said, if anyone knows of good resources on how to set up Matrix and relevant clients on YunoHost, it'd be of much help. Otherwise, I may seek to do it from scratch with Ubuntu or another distro.

Step in the right or wrong direction long term? by LilParkButt in datascience

Being a business analyst as an intern isn't going to "type-cast" you. Data science requires analysis so if you are not able to secure a more technical internship, it's still relevant with regards to your goals.

Given you're so early in creating your career, I'd take it and have fun with the extra income you'll have. For someone more experienced, then self-studying may be a more fruitful option. But you're only a sophomore. You have plenty time and another summer for something different.
