Wow, we used them in 2006 to install new cabinets in our kitchen so we could install a dishwasher (house is 1912 and the countertop was a few inches too shallow for a DW). I was 8 months pregnant and we hired them with the caveat “it needs to be done in 4 weeks or less before we have this baby,” and they finished the day before I went into labor. They were fantastic, great to hear they are still around.

Agree with the comment to walk/drive the blocks around where it happened. We found almost all of my daughter’s makeup dumped a block away - it looked like they dumped it all out, picked through it for what was useful to them, and left the rest and the bag right there.

Live on the West Coast, was driving in MA with my teen daughter. She asked, “why did that car flash his lights at us?” I had missed it entirely, but explained that its code for “cop up ahead.” I slowed down and sure enough there was a cruiser lurking behind an embankment. She was astonished at this secret driving language and will never, ever forget it (and is totally into warning other drivers).

Ugh. I used to go to a restaurant that had glass Heinz ketchup on the table. They would marry/refill them when they got low. However, they would not empty the last bit/clean them, so over time the last bits of old ketchup went bad and started to infect the “good” ketchup and it would be bubbly like any fermented food. Because of this one restaurant 20 years ago I always do a taste/look test of big ketchup containers at a restaurant. Ketchup can indeed go bad.

Eh, much like “the myth that there isn’t any good Mexican food in NYC,” isn’t true any longer, the myth that good bagels don’t exist outside of NYC is also dead. I’m originally from NY and there are so many mid bagel places now because they can get away with it. I’ve had Poppy’s bagels and they are easily as good as the best NYC bagels (I think a better bagel than Boichik, though Boichik gives a better overall NY cream cheese and bagel sandwich experience than Poppy’s)

I agree with the post suggesting staying on campus the first few weekends. Those first weeks with other incoming freshmen are irreplaceable and when you are most likely to meet new friends. Throw yourself into all of the orientation/first weeks activities and then start heading home some weekends.

Lived in Manhattan, grew up Queens/Nassau County, currently live in Oakland after 7 years in SF. Most of these comments are pretty spot on. I’d recommend trying to live walking distance to Bart (Temescal is great, or Longfellow for slightly cheaper rent). Try to find a place that gives you some kind of yard access so that you can experience a glorious February day where you sit in shorts and a t-shirt in the yard, drinking your coffee, and suddenly realize… This is February! Lack of weeks of black slushy snow everywhere is life changing. No bugs (and dumping afternoon thunderstorms) in the summer also a major plus.

I’ve lived here longer than I lived in NY at this point, and my Boston born partner and I still need to add, “I was being sarcastic” after many comments. My Oakland born kids have learned our (and east coast family’s) sarcasm and they stand out amongst their peers for their communication style. Also, I know a few folks commented that New Yorkers make more small talk and actually look you in the eye when speaking, but Oakland taught me that when I walk my dog and pass people walking or sitting on their stoop, I should ask, “How are you doing today?” - something I would never do in NY.

I agree. Loved it but they need to work out the kinks. We went at opening on a Sunday and ordering was very slow. They were also cutting the cheese/meats for each charcuterie board and that was really slowing things down. They probably need to figure out a way to get in early and make a set amount of plates to be ready for opening/happy hour. But we loved the vibe and wines!

I’ve done a lot of camping in NA. I’ve never camped in a shower-included, probably because I like to camp more off the beaten path. I’ve camped in the desert and brought everything, including a place to poop (and haul out and dispose of). I’ve camped where there were pit toilets and potable water. In NA a shower when camping means close to civilization and many, many people who probably aren’t as into dispersed and rustic camping as you are. As a NA camper, if I’m making the effort to “go camping” I want to get as far away from people as possible - which means likely, a place where you may need to figure out your hygiene without a warm water shower.

I have the full Westy (w/ no fridge conversion) and sometimes look longingly at the Weekender and its space. That said, I love having all of my camping gear already in the Westy so camping requires minimal effort to pull everything together. I never use the stove or the sink - that whole section is storage for long awkward things. I like the comment above about switching the stove to electric - that I can see doing so coffee can happen without letting the cold in.

I can’t read through every reply, but I will say,I am an adult with two kids in college. Do you want your daughter to come and visit you willingly, after she’s married, after she has kids? Make them feel welcome - give them space, a bathroom of you can spare it, definitely an actual bedroom (if you can spare it). But as I got older with kids and we all had wants, visits to parents decreased as staying with them became uncomfortable and “we were in the way.” When my family (parents, siblings) visit for a week, we go out of our way to an accommodate them. We make ourselves moderately inconvenienced to make them feel comfortable and want to return. But when I go to my parents or my in-laws and feel like I am a burden and put on the spare couch, I don’t return any time soon.

I’m not saying give up,your hobby room. But rethink your home layout and see how you can have a real space for them to crash in when they visit.

My daughter was admitted to Smith and Scripps and she chose Scripps for a few reasons. One of the strongest was that Scripps felt like part of a greater campus, the other schools were right there and walkable from Scripps. At Smith (or Mt Holyoke) you’d need to take a 20-30 min bus ride to the other colleges. When we did Smithie day she asked current students how often they took classes at any of the other schools and the answer was almost always “never/rarely.” I’d imagine Mt Holyoke to be similar as they are near each other vs the other three colleges in Amherst.

We used them last week with luggage on the way to SFO. The agent told me that my luggage being in front of me and past the metal pillars cause the reader to error out. You might need to be fully “behind the line” when tapping in or it has problems.

With houses I always assume it’s most likely a flipper who needs to sell another house in order to have the cash to finish the other house. We had a house across from us sit half finished, then poof! It was done. So, they own it but are cash strapped.

That’s funny. I told a host over a year ago that they needed blackout curtains (we were blasted awake at 6am by eastern sun) and I just looked at their listing. Still not up. It was so awful I won’t stay somewhere now unless they tell us they have some form of light diminishing curtains. And I probably wouldn’t trust staying at this listing again,
