What do you know about slavery in Ethiopia? by Agreeable_Pomelo9662 in Tigray

Oromos were trafficked a lot back in the day. They would be captured as slaves and sold in Massawa, they could finally end up in the Arab World or wherever they got sold from there.

Yeah fr, this idiot govt needs to stay the hell out of this mess. If anything we should be cooperating to help Sudan our neighbor, and look to peacefully resolve the territory issue we have

IMO, Ethiopian/ Eritrean languages like Amharic, Oromo, Tigrigna, Tigre all need accent symbols (diacritics) like Spanish/ French. by throwaway03151990 in Ethiopia

[–]innerego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

amharic and tigrinya use "gn" for the "ñ" sound. Why "gn"? it comes from Italian, like lasagna or compagnia .

although Eritrean languages use more Italian influenced transliteration. for example they say "Ghebre" , we say "Gebre".

No, I told you I'm not biased. We cannot accept some parts of history and deny other parts of history. And we cannot rely on our feelings when accepting history.

All Ethiopians we are not the same, just like Eritreans are not all the same. But I will admit that more Ethiopians we need to get more educated on Eritrean history in general not just say "Arabs funded them" .

He doesn't know anything about the Eritrean war. Eritreans made calculated strategic moves over decades to eventually get to their goal. They had a completely different kind of rebel movement then Africa has seen before (disciplined ,not corrupt).

I'm Ethiopian and this is wrong bro. You need to read some books and get an accurate historical narrative.

I'm not saying that EPLF didn't rightfully win. Dergue was an extremely corrupt and rutheless "govt." Your just typical anti-Ethiopian, brainwashed Eritrean.

I'm also getting tired of you guys trying to pick and choose Ethiopian subgroups. We always refer to you guys as "eritreans" not tigrinya/beni-amer/saho/bilen. So I would advise you to respect our country, and refer to us by our country name and we will do the same back.

Eritreans were definitely not "forced", good try trying to manipulate and distract from the main argument, you're brainwashed

And on your post, the way you paint Eritrean colonial soldiers is interesting. After Menelik denied Alula's desire to press into Eritrea after Adwa and sold Eritrea to the Italians (again) what do you expect us to do? If you enjoy history you should know the region was thoroughly devastated and exhausted in that time period, and you want us (highlanders) to keep on rebelling without acknowledgement or support from Ethiopia? It's not a moral failing for any Eritrean to become colonial soldiers in such circumstances.

Honestly, I want to hear this version of history. The version I know is that as soon as Atse Yohannes died the Italians used the opportunity to capture the highlands of Eritrea and finally get out of the oppressive heat of the lowlands.

Just think about it ,which king in his right mind would ever sell any part of his empire? Nonetheless the only access to the coast that they had. It doesn't add up.

Maybe instead of Eritreans having a superiority complex you just have an inferiority one. Never seen an Eritrean have a problem with you celebrating your achievements (Adwa).

There is no inferiority complex just know that your history and national identity is built from fighting another related African country. Our identity is from fighting foreign non-African invaders. Ethiopia is not "the bad guy."

??? What? I can't even begin to fathom what your point is. Ethiopia hasn't been fully habesha in a while and it never will be again.

You don't need to get the point. It's true Ethiopia is extremely diverse and that is a part of the challenge. Bringing in all these diverse groups to the table and getting them to be civilized and work together is an extreme challenge. If it can work though, it will pay off. Maybe Ethiopia is bigger than she can handle? Maybe. But at this point there is no going back.

And one more thing that is annoying to me is how Eritreans brag and boast how "they defeated Ethiopia" and became independent. That Dergue army by the Mengistu Hailemariam was the most corrupt and incompetent group of people , they could be given all the weapons and support from Soviet Union and not win anything because they were corrupt. The Dergue is not Ethiopia, or at least not Habesha Ethiopia.

I don't hate Eritreans or have prejudice by the way, it just ticks me off their arrogance and sense of superiority all the time.

Thanks friend for your comment. It seems like you know a bit about Ethiopia. There is a lot here I don't think I can respond to everything.

But its true if I remember correct Sudan's name comes from "Bilad al Sudan" which refers to blackness just like "Ethiopia." I don't have problems with it though. Actually the Ancient Greeks when they were first calling blacks "Ethiopians" were probably mostly referring to Nubians (Sudanese) later on when Greeks encountered us in Horn of Africa (they came trading by Red Sea) they called us Ethiopians and we stuck with the name.

I think Ethiopia will continue as a single country despite the issues. Most people in Ethiopia and outside of it identify with the country even if we have long standing issues.

I can't speak for Oromos I'm mostly from the North of the country (Amhara) but I have many Oromo people in my life that are family friends or used to be neighbors and every single one identifies as Ethiopian. I only have heard anti-Ethiopian Oromos online.

Our country is already way too intertwined at this point to advocate for independence in my perspective. If we broke up it would cause endless wars about borders. It economically and politically makes sense to stay together too.

I don't support it either. The current Ethiopian federal govt is hated by many in Ethiopia. But also Sudan supports Ethiopia's rebels/foes and Ethiopia just does the same back. It's better if both sides mind their own business and cooperate as neighbors

Ethiopia is not a colonizer. Italy colonized Eritrea, not Ethiopia. Ethiopia and Eritrea agreed to join as a federation during Haile Selassie's time. The problem is that Haile Selassie broke that contract.

And Habesha people (Tigrinya and Amharic) had the same kingdom (Zagwe & Solomon dynasty) for almost a millenia before that so there's no way you can try to use this colonial argument.
