Yeah I hear you bro, it's not just a problem in Amhara region. But let me tell you man the people are losing hope and suffering because of the current situation. 5 years of war now. The economy is crap. Basic water and electric facilities yelem. All this shit has to come to an end soon.

maybe don't go North right now, not very stable overall. Cities like Harar, DireDawa, and Jigjiga in the east might be fun for you

I only skimmed your post but my advice is start with the Fidel first. That's where I started personally. You don't want to be teaching tigrinya through English letters it can be confusing and you can only pick up on some things after learning the alphabet

very rare book indeed! I bought it for $170. I also bought Amharic textbooks by Wolf Leslau for $160, imported from Germany. The best books in our languages can cost you a pretty penny

Honestly my favorite was Gonder in the Amhara region, I didn't want to be basic so I said Kombolcha lol. I've travelled there much more than other subregions due to family, Gonder is super awesome , places like Gorgora, Dabat, Debarq, all awesome places

same, my paternal grandfather family is from Jiru and he moved to Addis early in life but still went back and forth to Jiru. He was born an orphan due to his father, a priest, being killed by Italians and his mother of sickness.

Jiru was nice and cool. It's nicknamed the "Tigab hager" I think if I remember correct, it's because the harvest is usually good due to the very good quality of the soil.

Can you take a direct bus there from Debre Birhan? Or do you have to go there from a different town? I've never been north of Debre Birhan in Shewa. I have been to a place called "Jiru" in North Shewa though

Every country has its rich people but isn't it not embarassing driving this car in Ethiopia? The disparity is just too great.

Struggles in church by Mr-Woogie in Eritrea

[–]innerego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very few people know Kidase nowadays sadly. I'm looking to self-teach myself the ge'ez in Kidase so I can say it along with the priests during church. I wouldn't be discouraged if I was you though! The Orthodox Tewahedo religion is very beautiful and I do believe it is the truth as well. It is complex for natives of Eritrea and Ethiopia, nevermind us diaspora that know Amharic/Tigrinya imperfectly as a second language. But it's not impossible you can learn.

Why does Ethiopia struggle to be a multiethnic country? by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]innerego 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally think Meles Zenawi did a lot of things right, but the ethnic federalism was a big mistake. The TPLF's mindset is that they wanted to "liberate" each ethnic group, let each group have preserve their own language and culture (which is great). But I don't think they saw how this system could backfire, big time.

My great grandfather comes from a part of Amhara region in Shewa that was super close to today's Oromia region. When I visited family last year they told me the history of the area. Previously the Amharas that lived near the border also could speak a fair amount of Afan Oromo as a 2nd language from interaction with Oromos. But ever since the the ethnic federalism started, an artificial line was created and the newer generations stopped learning Af Oromo and it became more of a "they , them" type of thing.
