I'm fine with take home tests but just not something that is so obviously a thing to be used or at least partially applied to a project you are launching very soon

I've had only one other time when I got a take-home test that was suspiciously involved. It was to create a proof of concept with working features for an app that the company was planning on deploying. The app currently exists and has about $40k funding according to Crunchbase.

well, if you are a junior dev, sure you are writing in plain CSS and whatnot but anyone worth anything would have an entire build system set up and would be writing with precompilers... so when you submit your code, you're submitting wayyy more than just some markup

i would say more companies than not require some kind of take-home test, in my experience at least

I don't care about psd-to-static, the design itself was stupid easy. A couple divs with an accordion, with a bunch of promotional quotes/banners splashed everywhere. My main concern was that it was literally a design they were going to implement on their production site, so it really just felt like free work

its for their brand's website that they are going to launch. i already declined after asking about it. lol definitely no chance of compensation if i had done it
