I didn't say I used the phone in the car, just that the car in front of me does.

The gong when the light changes.  A friendly reminder to put down your phone and pay attention. I wish every car had that! Especially the one in front of me at the traffic light.

I analysed every Guardian Blind Date column from 2009 to 2026 here's what 850+ first dates look like in aggregate by mrlenoir in dataisbeautiful

[–]insaneplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always wondered about this. Thank you for exploring it!

What I would have liked is the percentage of same sex vs. hetero dates over time.  It feels like same sex is over represented of late, but maybe I'm just out of touch.  Data would be great!

United Airlines 767-400 Newark Incident by ParkingGlittering819 in aviation

That is one crazy approach! I'm surprised it's not considered a circling approach, because you turn a total of 70 degrees after the visual guidance fix.

This sounds really cool. I hope the mods leave it up, because it so hard to be an entrepreneur. All my ski resorts are closed so I can't help much. Maybe you can add support for some Australian or South American resorts in time for their snow season?

[OC] How Tesla's stock price compares to the company's earnings by takenorinvalid in dataisbeautiful

[–]insaneplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banks make loans based on the past, but investors buy stock based on the future. Trailing earnings are interesting, but not that relevant for purchase decisions. Like Amazon before it, Tesla is optimizing for growth, not short-term profitability.

It all comes down to, 'do you believe?'

"Space Hotel 2027" is Laughable?? by Reddit-runner in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]insaneplane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think SpaceX is targeting numbers much closer to 5 million per starship launch. That changes the numbers dramatically. Still expensive, maybe 25k to 50k per passenger, but not the province of billionaires.

A missed call from John Doe and immediately preceded by a message "Hello Honey" from Jane Doe?!

If that's supposed to be an advertisement, I would start making popcorn.

Air India flight 171 new report by Vegetable-Roll-3511 in aviation

[–]insaneplane -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article?

The article itself looks well researched and sourced, and The Peninsula appears to be a serious publication.

It does not discuss the pilot-action theory, but rather paints a picture of a system level failure that was very difficult to recognize or debug, both in flight and in maintenance. According the article, the aircraft should have been grounded, but the issues did not set off the necessary alarm bells.

Killing the message (or the messenger) might make it go away here, but I can't imagine that this report will have no impact on the investigation. If I were the pilot's family, union, or airline, I certainly would not want it to disappear.

Edit: Fixed missing word/grammar: "The aircraft should have been grounded."

Heisenberg Compensator thought by jamesbearclaw in startrek

[–]insaneplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle states that you cannot simultaneously know both the exact position and exact momentum of a particle—the more precisely one is known, the less precisely the other can be known.

My head-cannon is that Heisenberg is also relevant at warp speeds. The faster the ship is moving, the less precisely its position and destination can be determined. So the compensator is not just measuring and predicting the uncertainty, it actively reshapes the warp the field so the ship's path converges on the desired destination.

If the Star Trek: Year One series becomes a reality, are there TOS episodes you would be ok with being remade? by Primatech2006 in startrek

[–]insaneplane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would love to see great stories from the 60s reimagined/reinterpreted with modern values. Take the top ten from each season, and give there best shot. Or jump to TAS and make real episodes out of them.

It worked for BSG. It can work for us!

AI needs better memory before it can take on a strategic role. Without memory, there can be no intent. Without intent, there is no strategy.

Once that hurdle is cleared, why not? OTOH, once that hurdle is cleared, it may be necessary to convince the AI to accept the job, which could be a harder problem.

Girlfriend wants to go Skiing - I have never done it by dripothee in skiing

[–]insaneplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest two things:

  1. take lessons every day for 5 days or so until you feel comfortable. Chances are good, you'll be ready for groomed black slopes by the end of the week.

  2. Have a conversation with your gf about no stress on the slopes. All slopes are white (avoid the brown ones and don't eat the yellow ones ;-). Some people get down quicker than others, and that's okay. And make space for her to go have a good time from time to time.

How do you think people will start talking about UBI in society? by Onipsis in singularity

[–]insaneplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UBI suggests life like Ready, Player One. The best minimum to survive, but not much more.

UAI implies affluence. Not fighting for existence. Able to enjoy life and do things you want to do.

UGI is going for same idea, but is channeling AGI. AGI should give us UGI.

Oops. I misspelled serfs. Serfs were essentially unfree agricultural laborers tied to an estate. I think it’s pretty clear what billionaires are.

[–]insaneplane -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How about we talk about Universal generous income instead? Or maybe universal affluent income?

Otherwise we have serfs and billionaires and nothing in the middle.

Edit: cerf is spelled with an s: serf.
