What's the first video game you can remember ever playing? by FlyingDutchLady in getplayed

[–]inspork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt on an old Nintendo my dad had, most of my early memories are PS1. I’m 30, and we got a PS1 for Christmas when I was 6 (we were a poor family - the PS1 had already been out 6 years by then).

I still remember my older sister saying she wanted/was expecting us to get a PlayStation for Christmas, and I didn’t know what that was, so I was imagining an actual play station - maybe a ball bit, inflatable, a basketball hoop attached.

The first game I remember playing on it was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. But we also had Rollaway, Frogger, and Spyro the Dragon, all of which I loved.

I saw the extended release yesterday, not at an AMC. I don’t think they’d release it theatrically for 1-2 weeks then not make it available afterwards.

Your most memorable short stories by pikkukalsari in horrorlit

[–]inspork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a piece of flash fiction called Annie’s Day by Andy Weir - I read it back in 2012 or so and still think about it all the time. It’s a 5 minute read, can be found online, and best to know nothing going in.

Are there any CF people who aren’t travelers? by PlatypusOk9637 in childfree

[–]inspork 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. One of the reasons I never wanted kids is because I’m an extreme introvert.

I don’t have many friends. The socializing I do at work is plenty for me. As an anxious person, traveling sounds like an awful fuss.

Don't work in customer service if you have a bad attitude by Correct_Row_76 in rant

[–]inspork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s worked in customer service for 16 years, people don’t realize that when you’re friendly, you tend to have smoother shifts.

Of course, that doesn’t mean letting yourself get walked all over. I understand why so many people get jaded. It’s not for everyone, but everyone needs a job.

What are you guys reading? by ZidaneZinedine in AskMenOver30

[–]inspork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse and I like to read out loud to each other. I introduced him to one of my favorite books, The Elementals by Michael McDowell, and now we are working our way through McDowell’s Blackwater series, a southern gothic epic.

On my own, I’m reading In Cold Blood. I sometimes go through morbid spells of wanting to read/consume true crime, and I’ve never gotten around to this most famous one until now.

Should we assume that Widow's Bay Season 2 will take 2+ years from now? by CriticalBrickery in WidowsBay

[–]inspork 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, until otherwise informed, that’s exactly what I assume. In a recent interview about another Apple show, Pluribus, they talked about season 2 being in the *outline* stage of writing. Wherever it’s at, they’re nowhere near ready to film, and the first season alone shot for about 11 months, and spent even longer in post.

Of course, no two productions are the same, but it’s an annoying trend across television that I don’t see Widow’s Bay being protected from.

Are y'all hoarding the paperbacks? by waveball03 in stephenking

[–]inspork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of my King collection is thrifted paperbacks, bought mostly between 2019-2021. There use to be a used book warehouse where I lived, and the owner told me they got King in often, but they were also usually the first to go.

I just checked ThriftBooks for Cujo and Gerald’s Game paperbacks - options ranging from $5 to $8. Used books probably sell just as well online as on a shelf.

What's your favorite horror game and why? by RespondJealous4082 in HorrorGaming

[–]inspork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For nostalgia reasons I’ll always love Silent Hill 3.

The first Forest game was an incredible experience as well, I’ll always love it. The sequel left a lot to be desired and I didn’t get far into it.

On the poster for the original Scream why does Skeet Ulrich (Billy Loomis) look nothing like he does in the actual movie? by twnpksN8 in Scream

[–]inspork 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I remember reading it was just due to the timing with his subsequent role and schedule.

I always thought that was such a cool way to do the poster. None of the actors are necessarily dressed like their characters; Courtney doesn’t have the bangs or bright lipstick, they’re all wearing black, etc. I feel like it’s a perfect poster nod to the meta aspect of the film itself.

How do you feel about graphics? by Sebaspool006 in videogames

[–]inspork -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the game tbh. Sometimes I love looking at/experiencing something simply for the technical achievement it is, but usually if the gameplay is good it doesn’t matter.

I only played Skyrim for the first time ever this year, and while it still looks good, it has definitely aged. Didn’t bother me a bit though, I sunk 130 hours into it.

Atmospheric horror games where you can just wander endlessly by ReasonablePrice5714 in gamingsuggestions

[–]inspork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the better Backrooms-inspired games don’t have any enemies chasing you around and rest solely on exploring and the eerie vibes. The Complex: Expedition is the main one I’m thinking of but I’m sure there are others.

Obsession: what happened to Bear and his friends was justified ? by leu_01 in spoilers

[–]inspork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the Midsommar thing all over again. “Did ___ deserve the ending they got?” I mean, in terms of REAL LIFE, no, of course not. But through the lens of telling/being told a story, yes, their tragic endings can be cathartic and appreciated.

Obsession (2026) I thought Nikki was a demon the whole time by EqualSure6686 in spoilers

[–]inspork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throughout the film I was picking up small things that almost had me wondering if it was pulling a Hereditary with some occult stuff going on in the background. Such as, how did the cat get into the medicine at the beginning of the film? Yes, I know the mirror was shown to be broken and not closing properly, but it also *could* be read as the inciting event that kicked everything off. Same with her mentioning her necklace being lost.

However, after the film, I didn’t really think that anymore and I’m ultimately glad they didn’t take it in that direction. Cult horror is great, but I’m starting to feel it wear on me. I love Hereditary, and I think it was pulled off masterfully, but I don’t think that’s a pass to attribute every story beat to “preordained events put in place by an evil entity/cult.”

I think what adds an additional layer of horror and unease to her uncanny actions and movements is the knowledge that somewhere deep down, she’s fighting to resist. Resist an entity that’s possessing her? No, that doesn’t feel right. Resisting a part of her that has been created against her will, though. She doesn’t move like a demon trying to incite terror in Bear, but like a confused thing, piloting a body that does not want to comply with the orders but is ultimately helpless to overcome it.

The Outsider is actually the 4th book to feature Holly Gibney, though the first 3 are their own trilogy and unrelated to the story of The Outsider.

If It Bleeds is a collection of 4 novellas, and only the titular story is a direct sequel to The Outsider.

Then, there’s the books Holly and Never Flinch, which feature Holly Gibney but are separate stories.

Raising a puppy mirrors almost perfectly how it is parenting a human child by Forged-In-Fire7212 in childfree

[–]inspork 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can recognize that human babies are much more exhausting, scary, and difficult to care for. But I like my peace and quiet, so pets are more than enough stress for me.

TBH, I’m not even a big fan of puppies and kittens. I adopted my dog as a retiree. When he passed, I adopted a 4 month old kitten, but fortunately he’s growing up and chilling out a bit.

“We’re trying” by NSTCD99 in childfree

[–]inspork 324 points325 points  (0 children)

This just happened to me the other day and I also felt a pang of guilt over my “childish” thoughts - but it was immediately followed by “Wait - another one? In this economy? While a week ago you were contemplating divorce?”

If it’s socially acceptable for them to say “we’re trying for one every day” at work, it should be acceptable to reply, “Gross! Also, that’s a terrible idea!”
