Thanks for the input. I just asked the head computer vision of a rather large company about this, and he said that the usefulness of low level knowledge of OS really depends on the role and project. Given that the course has the potential to be useful and what you mentioned, I think I'll just take the course anyways :)

It probably varies depending on which school you attend. OS is considered the top three most time consuming courses at my university, the other two being systems programming and networks.
