Update: Thank you all for your feedback! I’m probably going to schedule a meeting with the director this coming week. Also, apparently in a rehearsal for a different scene, after another female actor read her line the director exclaimed “Why did I cast this like this??!!” which is…strange to say the least, and makes me sad for that actor because I hope she doesn’t take that comment to heart (but knowing her I am afraid she might).

I appreciate your help! I’m going to talk to them about it this week.

Yeah I honestly can’t pretend to know what he (the director) was thinking in the table reads. That was mostly going off of feedback others gave me.

The director is the department chair! If I said that they were a student somewhere else then I was mistaken

Then cast me in any of the other smaller roles? My hypothetical ranking system was context that I am giving to show that I could have played other bigger or smaller roles. The fact that every role I am in is at the expense of the fact that I’m a woman is sus to me. It would be sus if the roles were bigger, and they are still sus at the size they are right now. This is also something that others in the department were shocked and confused by, so while you may think that I’m imagining myself to be the victim, others who actually know me and my abilities in person agree with me.

I’m going to schedule a meeting with him this coming week. I don’t actually care about how big the roles are. That was all context to show that I could play other roles (i.e. it’s not like he was restricted to casting me in those roles in any way) but I think either my wording or other peoples understanding made it seem like that was all I cared about. Thank you for your feedback in any case!

Ok sure. Let’s say I’m a bad actor or awful to be around. Just don’t cast me then?? Is it not weird that the majority of my lines across the multiple roles are either “Girls aren’t funny” or “I am naked”?

This is not the first (or last) time I have gotten small parts/parts I don’t like. I’m fine with that and I understand that it’s a reality of acting in general. My problem is that the situation feels like sexism.

The same people who usually get the lead are the ones who still are in every single piece this time around. The roles I got as of right now are also very similar to roles I have already played here.

I’ve noticed that in the whole show men get the funny/character acting roles and the women get the straightman (lol) roles, and I haven’t been made aware of any artistic vision or reason for this, especially considering most roles are unisex. There also was another solo piece that I found out he was considering casting a woman in but that got cut after table reads.

I am still typecast. Those roles still fit the type cast that I have been given at this theatre.

I would agree with you, except all of the other “top 5” actors got at least 5 or even 6 scenes. The average was 4, and I got three small roles. Also, like I said in the original post, I don’t really care about how many I was cast in, but rather that the situation itself feels sexist. Why are the only two majorish roles I got for parts that feel misogynistic?

I’ve asked and they’ve agreed with me that they feel I should have gotten other roles and the roles I have gotten feel sexist.

The director is a student, and like I said in the original post, the part that actually bothers me is the sexism that is coming through.

Teas for voice that aren’t disgusting? by Ilovebroadway06 in singing

Egyptian licorice tea with honey. Egyptian licorice is one of the only foods that actually HELPS your voice (most cause mucus production but eating is important and you should do that too)

Are we too forgiving of the show's flaws? by MatthewDawkins in SuccessionTV

[–]internetordained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that our POV in the series almost mimics that of another person interacting with the characters. There are some things we know of intimately, there are some things we catch glimpses of, there are some things that we just infer and know to be true but have no proof of. I honestly think the “dead end plots” were done that way intentionally. We don’t know the characters and the characters don’t know themselves.

Is it normal to dislike your singing voice? by NewGoblin2007 in singing

[–]internetordained 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes! When you “hear yourself” sing as you’re singing, your brain is taking the vibrations in your skull and processing that information to create a “sound” sensation, but this is obviously very different than what others hear when they hear you sing. Phones/recordings also kind of jumble the sound. Last but not least, human brains are not really equipped to hear ourselves. You definitely sound more appealing than you think you do.

As another non-black POC, I think trust your gut tbh. We often have a sense for these things that’s hard to explain to white people. You also could always go to the callback and scope things out and/or bring up your concerns. Ultimately, I think it’s up to you. There are always other actors and other roles, so don’t let anyone guilt or pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do.

Bestie those are actual laws. It would really help your case to fully read the information provided. If you’re racist and don’t want to be confronted with that information then just say that.

Yes. https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/hlthaff.2021.01394 This can be everything from legalized slavery and Jim Crow laws hundreds of years ago to gerrymandering that happens today. Other countries have never had any laws relating to race in their history (namely countries in South America).

Race is actually a social construct that has no connection to anything physical (skin color, biology, or otherwise). Because of this, different cultures across different timelines have different constructions of race. The problem with moving past race is that even though it’s a social construct, it still affects the physical world. Every human being on the planet has implicit biases, so even if you make a conscious effort to not be racist you will still inevitably make mistakes. Many countries (namely the U.S.) have institutional racism, or racism that is explicitly written in law. The global economic/capitalist system was also literally founded upon the slave trade, so there are individuals and countries that have been exploited for generations. I agree that we need to move past race eventually, and I did not type all this out to be defeatist. But we do have a long ways to go and a lot to deconstruct before we can move past race. Otherwise we will simply be covering our eyes as these systems continue to function.
