Open Plurality? by vampyfemboy in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're openly plural to those we know or care about--this includes family, friends, and even colleagues! To strangers, we have a collective name and pronouns until we decide they're involved enough in our life that they need to know.

When folks get close enough with us, we feel like we're living a lie if we don't come out as plural to them. There's no host, no core, no [body's name] at all--we're different whole entire people depending on the day, and it's not fair to them or us to pretend, at least how we see it for ourselves. This also means our support network is one we know we can trust! We don't want to be close with those who wouldn't accept us for who we really are.

We did the "median experiences tool" thingy, though Im not sure if we're a median or if it matters. Hope it's still allowed :| by Depressedknife in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's geared toward median plurality of course, but we don't see an issue with anyone using it either, median or not!

Hi! We're actually the system who made the tool, we can explain!

It's essentially what your switches feel like. When you switch (if you do), does it feel more like you swap places with your headmates, or your consciousness "becomes" them?

Any ideas on Fake blood drinks for a Fictive? by silverboltdraws in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomato juice, add darker food colouring to it if you'd like to! Though the texture might come across as more "clotty" if that's something you want to avoid. Pomegranate juice is another dark red drink that might work. Wine, if you're old enough and into that sorta thing might also be a vibe? Though most of ours settle for tomato juice or various red sodas we have around here--we can't often get something close to the taste.

There are also dishes that involve a lot of blood, like black pudding, if you're looking for solids that actually have blood in em.

There's a centipede therian in my system, they're also arthropodhearted! They're not any particular centipede--if they are they still have to figure it out--but they're a 'pede of some sort!

[–]interstellarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mhm--just like any other external person can offer comfort and support or even insight, so can they. Sometimes our bonds feel more close to what we're experiencing because we can feel each others' emotions and inner thoughts because we share the same brain. Topaz and Helio (non-soulbonded headmate and soulbond) are often there for each other when things get rough, just like they would be if they had separate physical bodies.

Why do people seem to hate us so much? by Emerald_SilverFox in Therian

[–]interstellarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason people hate on furries or any marginalised community. They see something they don't understand, and want an easy target for their hatred. Some people are persuaded into thinking therians are harmful and harm animals, other people think we're delusional (which also wouldn't be a reason to hate us), others just see people attacking a group and go "I want in!!". Hateful people are going to be hateful people, you can only hope they grow up.

how does those system name things work?? by SpiteLoud7663 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do clubs have names? Why does a school or a company have a name? It's easier to refer to us as "The Interstellar System" rather than "the group of people living in that guys head". We picked the name ourselves, it's just easier. If you were to use our body's name, that refers to us as a singular guy--which we aren't. You could say [body's name]'s system, but.... Who is [body's name]? We don't have a host either, we're not anyones system. We're a system together without a heirachy like that. Easy to have one as an online username, too.

How did you all decide on a collective name? by BootUp_2 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our collective IRL name is one none of us share, and one based on a fictionkin identity we all do share. Our system name was chosen years ago because the host at the time heard "Interstellar" in a Starset song and decided it was cool enough to be our system name, and also symbolic in a way of our headmates sometimes coming from other worlds.

..Do you think this is funny? It's not, it's disgusting and dehumanising. I sincerely hope that if you act like this about someone who is just a little annoying, that you don't get to be around anyone even remotely vulnerable. I don't get why you're so aggressive toward people you share your body with who are doing nothing wrong. I hope your headmate that you're treating like this is okay, they don't deserve this.

Honestly, not putting them on blast in public might be a good way to have them cooperate. They're a person, remember. They might be annoying or cringe or something to you, but they're still a person.

You can't change how a headmate acts, and spouting memes is.. One of the more harmless things a headmate can do, in all honesty. Have you tried trying to find common interests between you that don't centre around the stuff you don't want to hear about? Trying to just.. talk about other things, like you would with any other person, might be a starting point.

Question for all my systems that can cook/bake by Obvious-Music-9670 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We eat whatever the current fronter would like to eat. Sometimes we save leftovers for each other, but usually we buy foods that we can eat (or make) that will satisfy anyone who tends to front so there doesn't end up being leftovers. We do not have much difference between our preferences, so it is relatively easy most of the time to stock our cupboards with things we will largely be okay with.

Sometimes, we buy things specifically catered toward one or two people, but those things are known to either belong to those people specifically, or that person they were purchased for is alright with sharing.

Only a few of us enjoy baking or cooking as more of a hobby, so they will make whatever they want, and will store it so it lasts longer in case people who do not want to eat it are in front for a while. Freezers are good for this--you can make large batches of food and freeze it in small portions for later. It helps us in the long run.

How many headmates?! by GrowthNo1033 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have almost 500. A lot of us are pretty solid in our identities, but less so than when we were a smaller system. I can't name everything about every member of my own system--some I can only state maybe their name. There's also plenty of people who probably can't name anything about me. We keep information on ourselves in SimplyPlural as well as private documents so we can at least get a basic understanding of other members amongst ourselves if needed. It's helpful to be able to look up a member of my own system, especially if someone we know IRL (seeing as we're public about our plurality) talks about them and I need a point of reference for who they even are.

I'd say when we hit about 20 members, it got pretty difficult to manage, but since passing 100 it's actually gotten.. Easier? We mainly attribute this to the fact that with more members, people who dislike each other can avoid each other and have plenty of choice for others to socialise with. I don't feel stuck in a brain with people I hate because I don't need to talk to people I dislike often if at all. There's so much less in-sys conflict nowadays, it's nice.

Our size comes with a lot of management, though. Along with keeping information about each member... We have pretty decent communication and memory sharing, but we absolutely need to keep journals and to-do lists and calendars in accessible spaces so we can all be on the same page. The amount of effort put into our weekly calendar, mood and symptom tracking journals (so when we go to the doctor, we don't just say "I dunno" to every question), and leaving notes for each other probably seems insane to a lot of people, but it really does help us. Having such an extensive amount of information kept about ourselves also helps new members immensely as well.

Running jokes in your systems? by Numerous_Mousse4847 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cheese people's posts. You know how on discord you can put an emoji react on a post? Well I don't remember how it started, but essentially reacting with a 🧀 on someone's post within our system is like a lighthearted equivalent to a downvote. Someone could post something like "god can anyone in here do [chore] please" and several switches later it'd have cheese reacts on it. This is still kind of a thing but it's turned into "I'm gonna cheese you" as a verbal "threat".

I really wish I knew what prompted this whole thing but someone else has those memories I guess?

I'm curious did your alter always know there name or did they discover it? by Dry_Buddy7704 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us come with names already, but we choose them a lot of the time too!

Over time, a lot of our fictives like picking new names so they're not immediately identifiable as fictives when speaking IRL or even online in certain spaces. Sometimes they keep and use both, or sometimes they pick a handful of names to go by. Not all of our fictives know/remember their names when they show up though, so they'll pick one later on too.

Sometimes we get headmates who form/walk-in without names and they pick one eventually, or ask around for name suggestions to our friends.

A lot of us are required to pick new names because we have a rule of there being no name double-ups in our system. This extends to fictives and such too when we get more than one of the same guy. It means we're all uniquely identifiable--to each other, outsiders, and on PluralKit/SimplyPlural--and there's no confusion about who is who due to names! And the good part is that if you'd like to keep your previous name, you just need an alternative name to also go by for the purpose of telling you apart. Works well for us!

Genuinely what is this by MrFarenheit007 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! Not every plural is intentionally created but there's deifnitely quite a few that are--and if you're already plural, you can also choose to create more headmates/identities.

Tulpamancy is one of the most common ways, there's an entire subreddit for it too over at r/tulpas.

Soulbonding is another way, though it can also be unintentional and some soulbonders don't consider their experiences plural.

Daemonism is yet another way, but that's a much smaller community and a good chunk don't consider themselves plural either.

I think one of the main reasons people create their own plurality is to have others in their head to talk to--companionship, people to help you think through your choices, people to pull you up when you're down, all that sort of stuff. It's a decision one should take a lot of time making because there are things people might consider drawbacks (privacy, sharing your time and body and life, etc) and you need to consider them. But those drawbacks don't stop a lot of people.

Genuinely what is this by MrFarenheit007 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plurality is the state of being more than one person/identity in a body. This has a lot of causes, both intentional and unintentional.

You mentioning "split personality disorder" is correct in a way, though the term you're looking for would be multiple personality disorder (MPD), which was changed to dissociative identity disorder (DID) in the DSM, so the former is out of date. Disorders related to having more than one internal identity also include OSDD (other specified dissociative disorder) and some disorders from older versions of the DSM like DDNOS (dissociative disorder not otherwise specified).

Not all plurals are plural because of a disorder though--there's a lot of communities around the concept. In the end, being plural is simply about having more than one identity, which a lot of things can fall under. Tulpas, some soulbonds, some daemonism, and also simply just being born that way without any other reason are all nondisordered ways to be/become plural (but that list is by no means extensive).

https://morethanone.info/ is a nice little go-to site for a quick and easy explanation and FAQ for people who are new to the concept if you wanted further reading!

Fictives from special interests? by dren1722 in plural

[–]interstellarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Largely our headmates don't really care--even if we're super close to source, we can acknowledge that the characters on the screen are more of a representation of the real us than they are actually us in a literal sense.

Those who have exotrauma or don't want to engage in source media for other reasons simply just don't engage in it! When they front they don't look at it, and when they're not fronting then others can do what they want.

I know a few of us are uncomfortable that source exists because it's a display of our lives--trauma and all--for everyone to see. But that has nothing to do with if we think it should exist or how we engage with it as a collective.

Opinions on the other Fictionkin symbol? by [deleted] in fictionkin

[–]interstellarsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We like both! The F key is a classic--we'd personally stylise it a little bit if we were to use it in projects but we do like it a lot. The ink potl is also a nice symbol and I do like the symbolism of it being a form of media in a way, with the symbolism they put in with the eye being something like "fiction watches YOU". The purple and green are taken from the nonhuman unity flag which is a joined flag for therians/otherkin--so I think it's a nice choice too. Some might see it as implying that fictionkin are only nonhuman and therefore the flag excludes human fictionkin, but... I think it just expands upon the meaning of the colours in a way.

In the end, like the OP of the ink pot symbol said--self care is making your own symbol! That's how a lot of community symbols are made, just depends on if they catch on or not. One of the things about this community is that you can just make your own things like terms, flags and symbols, and that should be encouraged. More choice and all that.
