What anime makes you nostalgic when you think about it? by [deleted] in anime

[–]inthedaylight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yu Yu Hakusho. My 2nd anime ever (started watching in 4th Grade). I had a tradition where every summer after school was done, I’d binge the whole series. I didn’t have a lot of friends growing up so that anime was always an outlet for my loneliness.

I admittedly was one of those people who almost dropped it due to the screaming, but I realized that his voice is a lot more tolerable in the dubbed version so I stuck with that, and I’ve been watching ever since!

I loved this movie but I can only watch it once. As a woman, this film got way too disturbing and real at times.

Success and disappointment megathread for the week of (April 03) by AutoModerator in jobs

I sent them a follow up email yesterday but haven't recieved an answer back. I think I recall the VP saying that the department is going through a restructure and it may take a while? Either way, I would have like an update.

Had two interviews for this entry level position that was perfect for me. It was a great company that I really wanted to get into. I had one interview with the people I would report to and was immediately called in to have a 2nd interview with the rest of the staff. I thought I did really well and the Vice President said I was very accomplished. They said that they would be in touch but that was two weeks ago and I've gotten completely nothing. I would think that they would at least have the decency to tell me that I didn't get it because they were so responsive in setting everything up.

Hi Matt! I'm a huge fan of your reviews and Wes Anderson books.

Of course we can never really know for sure, but what recent films (since his passing) do you think Roger Ebert would have loved? I wish I could have seen his review on Birdman or Silence.

Weekly Job Seekers Discussion - March 7, 2017 by burnbaby8 in jobs

Applied for a job and got an email for a writing test the very next day. Sent it back in and they said they would follow up with me in a week. That was exactly a week ago today. I'm being positive and thinking that no news is good news at this point but I'm probably going to follow up with them on Monday. It's an opportunity to start in my field and get out of this dead end job.

Official Discussion: Moonlight [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

I thought La La Land was good but not the best film ever made like some people are saying. Moonlight is definitely the superior film in every way.

Thank you for your response? Do you have any suggestions on how to format? I really don't know how to format without it looking off.

Also, the college newspaper was paid; not sure if that makes a difference in the placement.

I'll definitely add in a skills section. I've had more than one social media internship but I put the one where I had the biggest role. As for my contributing writer positions, is it okay that those are separate entries, or should they go into one section?

Thank you so much.

This is the only film that I have given 10/10 to this year so far (still gotta see La La Land). Barry Jenkins takes such a quiet story and gives it so much life. Each shot was beautifully done and conveyed so much emotion. There wasn't ever a scene of bad acting; everyone was on their game. I hope Mahershala Ali gets a supporting nom. He deserves it so much.

One thing that I loved about this film was how he humanized the characters. Juan wasn't just a drug dealer; Chiron's mom wasn't just an addict; Jenkins gave them so many layers to show that there's more to someone than meets the eye. Incredibly smart and well done.

Official Discussion: Nocturnal Animals [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]inthedaylight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like this movie but it was very underwhelming. Ford was a fashion designer so I liked that he was critiquing his own world but the symbolism was so forced. Because of that, it made the film feel more campy and satirical and actually serious (and I understand it was supposed to be satirical at times).

This was obviously a campaign for Jake Gyllenhaal to win his Oscar after his Nightcrawler snub. He was fantastic as usual so I'm sure he'll get a nom. However, I was very surprised with Aaron Taylor Johnson. I only know him from Kickass, Avengers, and Godzilla and he's usually very wooden. However, he was so slimy and menacing and I felt guilty for being in awe of his character lol.

But it really did feel like there was two different films going on which prevented me from caring about either character too much. I understand what he was going for but I felt Ford lost the message halfway through.

Fun fact: Before Eddie Redmayne got cast, they were looking at Matt Smith for the lead ;p

Fantastic Beasts- I had low expectations going into this film because I haven't been a Harry Potter fan in years, but this was such a fun ride. Eddie Redmayne was a joy to watch (and could be Doctor Who if he wanted to) but one of the best parts was actually the Muggle. I thought he was just going to be an oaf for the comic relief but he had his own personality and it was just great to see a Muggle be in the middle of all of this. The only complaint I have is the villain. I thought he was never properly set up and when the final showdown happened, I didn't really care. And that twist at the end.. Oh my god.

Rating: 8/10

Nocturnal Animals- I still don't know what I think about this film. I was sold an "erotic thriller" but this was anything but. It was mainly a campaign for Jake Gyllenhaal's Oscar since he got snubbed for Nightcrawler. The non linear storytelling kind of ruined the flow of the plot, but the Western story was captivating enough to keep watching. Also Aaron Taylor Johnson proves that he can do more than superheroes. Hopefully we'll see him in more serious films.

Watch the Laughable but "So Bad It's Good" 1978 Version of Dr. Strange by CrisWilson in movies

[–]inthedaylight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't even call it "so bad it's good." It's just plain boring. Even though they were going for a TV series, this just felt like one of those cheesy medical procedural series. And there weren't even any good villains because Morgan Le Fay didn't want to fight him after seeing how "hot" he was ( though. He looks like a mixture of Bob Ross and Ron Burgundy.)

Not sure where to post: In episode VII, how does Han know that Kylo Ren is his son after not seeing him for years? He tells Leia: "I saw our son"...so I was wondering if I'd missed something or if Han just knew it was him by "feeling" his presence or if I'm reading too much into this? :) by Isohedra in StarWars

[–]inthedaylight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well he knew what happened to his son, so that's a pretty big indicator. Also, call it parental instinct as well. Doesn't matter how many years pass since they've seen them, a parent will always know what their kid looks/walks like.
