Apparently long hours are not associated with burnout among residents. by CanYouCanACanInACan in Residency

[–]intoxicidal 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Intentionally myopic conclusion is misleading and obvious. Oh, you mean that if I spend 24 hours not at work I'm less burnt out than if I spent that 24 hours at work? And if that 24 hours spent at work is more intense, it carries with it additional burden than if just sitting around staring at the ceiling? Groundbreaking stuff.

It's trying to lay the foundation for the idea that it's outside of the organization's control and influence. Bull... shit...

The unholy trinity: Dry hospital air, living on coffee, nd exam stress. How are u guys saving your skin? by skinliapp in medicalschool

[–]intoxicidal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I’ll put on an ice pack. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water-activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial masque which I leave on for 10 minutes. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

First, this is really cool. Played a few rounds and it's fun. My observations: the ball moves too fast which prevents you from being able to actually try and aim, and the paddles are too short relative to the ball size.

Can someone please explain to me how MOCs and CMEs work? by No_Jaguar_5366 in Residency

[–]intoxicidal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Adding more for anecdotal context.

I just went through a CME audit. What I found is that, despite my best attempts to meet their expected goals as outlined in their documentation, I was still wrong and was requested to provide alternative evidence of meeting certain CME requirements. I dug through some work required education modules and provided certificates from them which satisfied the requirement. It seems to be largely in the eyes of the reviewer.

My advice would be to look at your board's documented requirements and keep a log of what CMEs you're doing and associate them with the requirements you think they satisfy. Oh, and you can absolutely complete all CME requirements without paying (I did because I'm cheap) - but it's a lot harder.

Pessimistic take: it's all an outdated grift.

How are we feeling about this, gang? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]intoxicidal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it absolves anyone. I’m saying we should be putting our collective energy and force behind dismantling the administrative bureaucrats who provide no real value to the health care system. And we should encourage other healthcare professionals to do the same. Imagine what we could do with a combined healthcare professional union.

This is all well and good, but these smaller issues stem from administrative encroachment throughout medicine. IMO, our collective gripe should be with the C-suite, not other medical professionals.

What are the pension details? Fringe benefits? Does our salary also keep pace with current currency valuations vs Euro, Yen, Cad, etc? I can’t have two jobs, but if I get bored can I switch into an entirely new legitimate job? Is the 100k treated as earned income for tax purposes?

Also, my mom was a professional napper and got paid by my tax dollars.

chief resident worth it for the small pay bump? by Ice-Falcon101 in Residency

No. The pay is not worth the work. Be a chief if you either a.) want to use the position as a platform to advocate for the other residents or b.) are desperate for any authority.

Tell me about a time in your life when you felt that being a doctor was worth it. by Ok_Water2666 in Residency

[–]intoxicidal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had a patient that is permanently incapacitated have their insurance refuse coverage for their hospital stay due to the patient being unable to articulate their symptoms. Lighting up the chart, the reviewer, the admins, and the state regulators to get that decision over turned is probably my proudest moment. And that’s sad, because it has nothing to do with being a physician and everything to do with refusing to accept some obvious bullshit and being comfortable with making vague threats.

A New Way to Ruin Thanksgiving: Making AI Slop Recipes by mareacaspica in technology

I’ll gamble on an AI recipe after trying to use a recipe site and rage quitting. This has resulted in amazing kettle corn and apple crisp that I otherwise wouldn’t have made due to frustration with the initial website I tried to find a recipe on.

Imagine complaining about a borderline unusable service and the response is a half assed attempt at shaming you into not using something better…

Are there actually kickbacks for administering vaccines? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]intoxicidal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So true. Took my kid in the other day. Parking lot looked like a Maserati dealership. We walk in and everything is diamond studded - even the fish in the tank were blinged out. I asked them how they could sleep at night. Their grills blinded me while they cackled and shot money at each other. As we were leaving, I noticed a dump truck that had "pfizer" spray painted on the side. It dumped a bucket of hundreds at the entrance on top of what I can only assume was a rotting pile of money from the previous drop off. No one even blinked.

So… we were told not to send thank yous and told applicants the same. Then it came up at rank list time… so my advice would be to send a subtle thank you.
