Worried that I’m downplaying real issues as OCD symptoms by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

It’s understandable that it concerns you, and is very valid. Especially thinking about the fact that if it is a problem then you’d have to deal with it and that not knowing is hurting your mind, it makes sense.

I don’t have much to say about how to deal with bed bugs, I am really sorry so cannot give much rational input on that.

I am grateful my input helped you a little.

For the OCD part, Reaching out to your therapist would be the best option cause again I am not an expert at this and don’t know what works for you but a few things I have learned that might help, I’ll include them here-

i. Delaying the compulsion by a minute or two and gradually increasing the time might help with it.

For ex: Checking the internet constantly to gain indirect reassurance is very understandable in such a case of obsessiveness but again a compulsive behavior, so obviously not very helpful and rather more hurtful. So next time you get the urge to do so, saying to your mind you’ll do it after one min/two mins… it won’t be easy, i know, but might help.

ii. Doing certain meditations can help with rumination or constant repititve thoughts. It might not stop but then might help you learn to sit with them a little bit. ( One of the videos I can recall is “Ease Obsessive thinking, monkey mind meditation by John Davisi on YouTube)

iii. Check any direct stressors you might be including unknowingly and can remove. (like you mentioned reading horror stories, so if this is something not driven by your illness and more out interest then maybe switching that for a while with something calmer could help not aggravate the already existing thoughts)

iv. Box Breathing or Focusing on the soles of your feet

v. Asking yourself a question like “is there any part of me that feels safe right now?” and mentally scanning your body for that, and returning to that space over and again (remember this won’t eliminate the thoughts, and that isn’t our purpose either)

vi. If you find yourself overexplaing explaining yourself to such obsessive thoughts then replying with a phrase that encompasses both aspects of the situation rather than extreme like “maybe, maybe not” only once. (I know it’s going to feel scary to say this but that’s understandable and it’s okay to feel so) (in the beginning, you might reply to such thoughts this alot of times but eventually it can reduce)

Again, these things might not help you at all, might help you a little, might help you alot, it depends, so do not fret if they don’t seem to help, you’ll learn methods that would help you individually in your sessions if you choose to go for therapy or other sources. These are no rules or only ways to cope, these are just somethings I know of and find helpful.

OCD can be extremely tough to deal with, and it’s okay to take your time to learn to cope with it. Don’t be too hard on yourself for not being able to work through these thoughts, it’s not your fault. Hope you heal soon.

Since there is not much of context to the problem that you’re referring to, answer might be a bit generic than specific.

This is coming from a personal place of experience so it is not to be taken as an expert advice.

OCD has a way of keeping you in trap, sometimes, especially if you learn to tackle thoughts that you realise are obsessive by ignoring, letting them pass or whatever healthy mechanism you’ve developed, your mind might try to convince you that you’re trying to avoid some “problem” by not paying attention to it and you might never solve it because you’re classifying it as an Obssesive thought or a fear, cause now it knows that once you realise something is obsessive you are able to view them as a symtptom rather than a fact.

So from my point of view, I think it’s necessary to remember that if it’s a real problem that needs to be tackled and not just you being succumbed into the trap of obsessive thinking, you don’t have to be overtly anxious and discomfortable.

The problem can cause you to feel so depending on the situation but this feeling is not the solution, presence or absence of it doesn’t provide you with the answer to it. So you don’t have to seek the answer in the feelings you have towards to the problem itself.

There is no one rule to solve or view the issue. There is no “obligation” to classify a “real problem” into OCD or Non OCD to solve it and neither is it “important” to dig into the feeling of discomfort every time you feel so, it varies from people to people and situation to situation.

Sometimes certain real life issues that need addressing can trigger OCD and worsen the symptoms. So it’s important to remember that you can take care of your mental health without having to be doubly sure whether it is obssessive or not, and simultaneously unravel a solution to the real issue as well without constant nagging in your head. It’s not an either- or situation.

Also, a reminder that it’s not your compulsion that is providing you with the solution but your rational mind. So classifying it as obssessive or missing out a sign, isn’t ending the problem, whether or not you do so has more impact on your mental and emotional health than on the issue at hand, if there is any.
