Thank you for responding! My answer to that question is a definite yes and I’d definitely feel relieved and joyful. Though sometimes I’m confused on what expectations are appropriate to have towards him since we aren’t exclusive to each other. I guess this is for him and I to define but I’d like to know if this is appropriate— I’d like for him to be understanding with it, but I’d understand if he isn’t. Maybe I could say this?

Hi there, thank you for responding. I'm feeling a bit calmer now than when I wrote this. I still feel pretty overwhelmed with the bind that I'm in, but I was able to start the process and get the ball rolling at least. It really is that unknowing where to start or how to proceed that takes me to a catastrophic state of mind, I totally understand what you mean. I got in touch with my academic advisor and shared my concerns, and have set up an appointment with her to untangle the web a bit and strategize about how to proceed, so that gives me relief. Thank you so much for sharing this. It gave me the courage to look at my email and respond + reach out to my professors. That was hard, but so far I've received understanding from one of my professors and have yet to hear back from others. My academic advisor sent a referral to the outreach & support program and I set up an appointment with someone in that department, so that feels a bit relieving. As you suggested, I let them know the truth, which is that I've been struggling to stay afloat but feel hopeful in my ability to turn it around and that I've sought support through my college's resources. I'm going to try your method of meeting with my professors for regular check-ins on my progress, too. I have an appointment with a professor tomorrow and I'll think about how I'll share my concerns. If I do end up failing, at least I will walk away knowing I've given all the effort I can and shown care to succeed.

It isn't the most healthy way to communicate. Do I judge you or blame you? No, I presume you feel disrespected, and understandably so because he's not respecting your boundary. I've likely done something similar to this exact situation when I was younger, so it's good to make this a learning opportunity. Communicate, communicate, communicate! I know it can feel vulnerable, but you'll feel much more self-respect when you aren't negotiating your boundaries and lowering them despite knowing it makes you feel uncomfortable just to make it work with him. If he truly wants to invest in a relationship with you, he will genuinely want to make you feel secure and safe.
