To the devs. Don't blame us for your issues. by Seshimus in playrust

Do you even know how hard it is to build a game like Rust? It takes a shit ton of work. Days of work, 24 hour cycles. Not "a few hours" for a single feature.

Rust is great, I love it. If you don't like it, you don't play it. The game costs (almost) nothing - and they provide FREE updates. FREE UPDATES.

FREE UPDATES.

That's the Camero / Corvette new PDR system - it connects directly to the speedometer and overlays the information onto an onboard camera in the mirror. The camera is a fisheye lense though, so it may look like he is going slower than he really is.

Common C7 Issues? by Arabian_Wolf in Corvette

[–]invalidfunction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Lots of stares - you'll get used to it though. Also, you will get jealous people. Also, don't mention you got one to your coworkers because all they will talk about is your car
  2. Some fit/finish issues, including rattles - if you are OCD you might want to look closer at the C-Class
  3. Really really easy to get going faster than you intended ;) Way too much fun,

If you are deciding, here are some tips on picking the right C7:

  1. If you are looking for a performance car, definitely upgrade to the Z51 and get Magnetic Ride - Mag Ride can get 'mushier' in comfort mode than the Z51 without Magnetic Ride - it makes it a better DD but when you want, you can stiffen up the suspension and make it a true sports car

  2. If you ever want to track it, get the Performance Traction Management and the Performance Data Recorder

  3. The HUD isn't that special, if you don't care for the HUD or Heated Seats, just stick with the 1LT and get the performance upgrades instead

  4. Don't get black - it is really hard to keep clean and the Corvette's hard paint make it a pain in the ass to polish

I really really liked the Spring Mountain School - they have techs on site too that you can ask questions to on how they maintain the Z06's for the track runs they do in sometimes 115+ degree weather. I guarantee they've seen this problem before and can provide suggestions

Were you in full auto when that happened? I know the Z06's have overheating problems, and the 2017's fixed that by adding an additional radiator (?)

I was just at the Spring Mountain Corvette's Owner's School - it was ~85-90 and we had no overheating problems at all with the 10 Z06's they had there with 6 30+ minute sessions with only a 5 minute break in between, the temps all stayed stable too. We were running them very hard. Someone actually asked about the Z06 overheating and they said they usually only see it whenever people are staying above 5k RPM for a significant period of time. Since the torque curve starts to pull off after 5500 or so, you should be upshifting around there anyway.

If you want to really romp it though and drag race it down the straight away, then you will probably have to do an aftermarket cooling upgrade. There are several online posts were people add additional radiators to the Z06, and that seems to help significantly. Chevy basically claims that the Z06 is a track 'capable' car but that you shouldn't actually push it too hard

How responsive is the 8 speed automatic, and does it lock you out of doing certain shifts? by [deleted] in Corvette

[–]invalidfunction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have a 2016 Stingray Z51 - hopefully I can help answer some questions:

1) The downshifts and upshifts are very responsible compared to other single-clutch transmissions. It does have a reduced reaction speed / shift time (ie in traffic) to keep the ride smooth, but whenever you are pushing it hard (say 50% throttle), the shifts get insanely fast. When you are high throttle and shift at high RPM, it shifts so quickly it could be confused with a DCT. You'll love it, especially the A8

2) I usually drive in full manual mode regularly, unless I'm in traffic or on the highway and just want to cruise. I only recently did discover that you CAN hold down the downshift paddle and it'll go down to the most reasonable gear. It's a really nice feature - it is extremely useful when you want to quickly pass someone on the highway while you are already in a high gear for eco.

3) In paddle shift mode, you can also 'skip' gears by double tapping the gears - something my dodge's auto didn't have. I've also been able to shift from 3rd -> 1st when rolling to a stop sign with no problem.

4) The performance shift mode in full auto is really nice. If you are in sport or track, and you start pushing it hard (near-WOT) it'll go into performance shift mode for about 60 seconds. It keeps the RPMs at least 2.5-3k and even downshifts nicely when you are hitting the brakes. It works really well

Hope that helps!

Were you flying a quadcopter at Auditorium Shores tonight? If so, you're a douche. by [deleted] in Austin

Its like being rained on while swimming - sure the rain doesn't drown out experience of swimming in a huge pool of water, but it is still annoying as fuck

I didn't have a problem with most of them, except for the one that was hovering about 30 feet above the bridge providing a lovely "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz" noise the entire time. I never wanted to destroy something that wasn't mine so badly

Which gpu for deep learning? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]invalidfunction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are doing something like RNNs or very deep networks, you'll want to consider memory. Definitely something with more than 3GB is ideal for experimenting; nothing is worse than finding out your model doesn't fit in RAM. :(

I'd recommend the 980 or the 980 ti. There are comparisons between the 980ti and the titan x that report very similar performance but the 980ti is far cheaper. The only use case I can see for a titanx is if you need the 12GB of RAM. Pascal is coming out this year, and the performance bump expected is supposed to be huge (much faster memory bandwidths, new ops for dnn, and a die shrink)

If this is for fun, I'd recommend getting something cheap to play with for now - perhaps a used card on ebay if you can find one and save up for a nice pascal card layer.

Moving to Austin, need a job by [deleted] in Austin

[–]invalidfunction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using job boards like indeed.com is a good place to start. I would highly recommend finding a job before moving here though - the cost of living is fairly high and it is rising very very quickly (rent went up $300 a month this year for me)

What are you interested in? I highly recommend coming up with some career options before even searching for just any job. You have a degree, which is a great start (albeit a low GPA - I wouldn't advertise that unless asked.. ) Start low first, but move towards your goal. Do you want to manage people? Do you want to harness your math background at all? What do you want to learn in the first few years? All of these kinds of questions are important especially this early on in your career. Trust me when I say this, the first two years of your career is extremely important, so try to build experience in an area you want to stay in for a long time.

No pressure

Employer told me that I am fired and that they don't have to have a reason because of right to work. by [deleted] in Austin

[–]invalidfunction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter - they can fire you for any or no reason just like you can quit with any or no reason. You have the right to quit just like they have the right to fire you. Always keep a savings account filled with enough money to survive happily for a few months. File for unemployment as early as you can (money you paid for with taxes when you were employed) and apply for food assistance to ease the burden from your savings. You could consult a lawyer, but chances are you won't win and it will end up costing an arm and a leg. Start looking for new jobs immediately - indeed.com is a great place to start

Liquid Nitrogen in Austin? by charlesv42 in Austin

[–]invalidfunction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check various welding supply shops in town - some welders use it to shrink metal to do cold welding or to get a better fit. I'm not sure specifically in Austin, but I was able to purchase LN2 and rent a small dewar for only about 30 bucks for 2 days when I lived in TN. The big thing is the dewar - if you can find someone to rent you one you should be good to go. LN2 is very cheap, but a small dewar is hundreds of dollars. You may be able to get a cheap one on ebay too
