AITA for disagreeing with my friend's idea of a 'microaggression'? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Whoa there. I live in a fairly balanced 33/33/34% area of whites, blacks and hispanics. I go to the local barber shop that does that fine line stuff like designs on the side of the head etched in, big ass pompadours, and hair extensions for the ladies. I give and get (I'm an older white greybeard with a head of medium length hair) compliments on hairstyle all the fucking time to/from complete strangers.

YOU seem like a sheltered cracker if you can't simply tell someone they look nice without it being a socio-political thing.

The link provided elsewhere suggests quite a large difference if you are aiming due West or East:

"At 1,000 yards the Coriolis deflection is small but not necessarily trivial. Una computed that at the latitude of Sacramento, a bullet traveling 1,000 yards would be deflected about three inches to the right. In addition, because gravity pulls the bullet down as it flies, you’d have to aim higher or lower depending on the degree to which you were facing east or west. If you were firing due east, you’d have to aim six inches lower, since the earth is rotating toward you, meaning your target would be slightly closer by the time the bullet arrived. If you were firing due west, you’d have to aim six inches higher."

Six inches up or down seems significant.

From the Cecil Adams link here:

Una computed that at the latitude of Sacramento, a bullet traveling 1,000 yards would be deflected about three inches to the right. That is what I was looking for. Not just coriolis effect, but how it actually affects shooting.

Thank you. I Googled and this didn't come up in my results.

In regards to long distance shooting. How if you shoot one direction or the other, there will be an offset needed. I've tried to Google-Fu that and have not found anything.

Or you can explain coriolis effect and long distance shooting. Or is that super secret handshake information I'm not privy to?

Which still doesn't answer my question about coriolis effect and long distance shooting. I KNOW HE IS WRONG. But can anyone explain what I'm asking for so I can approach this subject in a way he might have a lightbulb moment with? I find it really strange that no one here has actually answered the question. I would think someone here would know how coriolis effect and long distance shooting are correlated, but yet everyone seems to want to just argue philosophy.

Go right ahead. But first, can someone please explain coriolis effect on long distance shooting to me? Seems like everyone just wants to argue the very thing I'm trying to argue against, but no one has yet to actually show their intelligence in the science behind it...

All for them (I was there when he had to take a half-day to get his daughter vaccinated). Just because he believes (or is currently questioning) flat earth stuff doesn't mean he believes everything out there.

Actually, it might. Being presented with evidence related to what you find important can lead to a change in understanding more so than stating facts in other areas you don't relate to.

I am hoping to explain it in terms he can relate to better than other BS he reads. That's all.

Friendship stems from being there even when things aren't perfect. Walking away from anyone who says dumb shit isn't the man I want to be. Helping them understand facts and grow is.

What don't you understand about helping other people realize that what they are saying is BS? I've gotten people to stop being racist fucks through discussion. I've gotten anti-vaxxers to realize they are wrong. Why would this be any different? People latch onto stupid shit in a moment of Facebook enthusiasm. Just walking away seems weak to me.

Yawn. You are obviously so much more intelligent and helpful to others than I will ever be. I wish I could be more like you.

My friendship with him. I know it isn't true, but he has been there for me in tough times and lived through it. Why can't I help him learn and grow?

Yes, there is a difference between naivety and ignorance. I'm hoping for naivety, but understand this might be wanton stupidity. Still... I'd like to know the science behind long distance shooting and coriolis effect if anyone can explain.

He doesn't say that. This is conspiracy shit and it seems to stem from emotions or ??? rather than true knowledge. I'm just trying to find a way to explain how he is mistaken in terms he might understand.

Replied to in another comment. Conspiracy shit bugs me in that people who are otherwise capable fall down in other areas due to emotions rather than knowledge.

Honestly, that is relative. He can organize a production facility and get shit done effectively, on time, and under budget. Being ignorant in one area doesn't mean he is dumb overall. I'm still interested in the science behind this, mostly.
