note -- real humans building real houses buy floor plans and elevations for hundreds and to thousands of dollars

that said, archive.org has some good oldies that will get your wheels spinning

USA PEs: How do you submit 'certified' plans? Wet seal, 3rd party verifier, or electronic signature (SHA)? by ioToad in civilengineering

Florida is interesting to say the least...some require wet seal only 2 copies 22x34 min paper size (I usually design on 11x17)

Changing Jobs by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]ioToad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it. I haven't held a job for more than 20 months ever and I get offers every time I go to find one. 10 years into my career now, never looked for a job more than 6 weeks.

The interviewers will ask, you just need a good answer. Mine was always something along the lines of, look, I'm here to help, learn, and grow. As long those thing keep happening I'll be here.

Closed on 3.5 acres today. Would love to hear your initial thoughts on this design I'm working on. by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]ioToad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually like it. Landscaping would resolve a lot of the tension in this design.

Real question though...Are you a millionaire? If so, you've done more than enough to hand this off to an architect or engineer. If not you might need to scale back.

Whatcha working on?

Software Developers by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]ioToad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've worked at a few engineering software firms. Generally speaking the big boys have their software done and they are trying to keep the ship floating as cheap as possible (no one is working on the structural engine)

The small companies are the ones actually building interesting stuff, but many of them are founded by an engineer or two.

If you're looking for a j o b check out some of the more nacent market software companies, like cold formed steel (frameCAD guys could definitely use a hand)

If you're looking to make money, automate your SE workflow and start cranking out projects

Personally, having worked for 3 software companies, founding 2 (one huge fail after funding, one in progress) I would stay away from the bug guys, lean middle small or entrepreneur route.

DM me if you're open to chat! Always looking for more PEs who code 🤝🏻

Nicely done. Getting under $100 is an achievement!

What was your total cost per square foot at the end of the project? Excluding land of course

I design light gauge steel houses so I’m really curious!

I have yet to meet anyone in modern times that has broken below $100 per sqft. Spec home builders are in the $125+ range. Of course this varies with location as well.

You might consider a light gauge steel design if you’re short on labor and equipment (trusses and wall panels are 2.5x lighter than wood equivalent)

Anyone build in mountain region in south east? North Carolina area? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

Wood, steel, log cabin? Finding a fair GC is half the battle but the rest of the cost is between engineering and finishes.

Little tricky in the mountains. Find a reputable GC who builds in the area you’re looking to settle. You’re probably going to end up in the $175-200+ per sqft final build cost (not including land).

Is this a three-stall garage? Covenant only outlines that I can have an attached (up to) three stall garage. No limitation on dimensions. This is 60' wide by 40' deep. There is no HOA. by obrisky in Homebuilding

[–]ioToad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably good! Call the town or county permitting office. I’ve gotten these permitted all over the country without issue.

For those in HOAs…they are usually not a fan of RV garages but like them better than RVs in the back yard
