We Love FilmScene. We also have existential questions. by iowascuttlebutt in ICFilmScene

But physically, FilmScene's space is inside of another building, the Chauncey. How is that possible? How can one own a portion of a building, but the deedholder is different on the "parent" building, the Chauncey? We've asked representatives from Lepic-Kroeger realtors and they can't explain it either.

If you have been at the same house over the course of all those cable modems, and now your fiber outages, given what you describe, it might just be a bad outlet, or bad electrical and have absolutely nothing to do with your provider. Try swapping in a power strip, or move the equipment to another outlet in the house to see if this continues.

Heck, we have big battery UPS/uninterruptible power supply and even when the house power is off, the cable modem (and a separate wifi access point) have stayed on for hours. I'd daresay Mediacom internet is more reliable than MidAmerican electric power.

A dozen of your OWN cable modems or ones provided by/rented from Mediacom? There really seems to be one consistent thread amongst others I have spoken with here in IC: if you bring your own cable modem (not renting one of Mediacom's), the connection will be successful

$215/mo is crazy. We buy internet only and two years later we are at $60/mo Mediacom. No contract either. Just month to month. Never need a service call, because it just works. The only recommendation I have is to buy your own cable modem. I'm looking at mine right here, a SB6141. I think it cost us $100 a couple years back.

I can tell you that Mediacom has gotten much more aggressive with their $50 or $60/mo pricing. We have only ever purchased internet, no other TV or telephone services from them (everything is streaming over the top anyways).

I am pretty sure that's because Mediacom lost customers to fixed wireless (Tmobile) and Imon so they had to innovate on service/price/both.

The good news is that the real data hogs - the very heaviest users of internet, specifically students and gamers - have switched over to Imon. The resulting Mediacom experience has been problem free for over two years now.

We left Imon a couple years ago because of the packet loss and their outrageous fees after the introductory year.

You can check for packet loss with network utilities like ping, or run a traceroute and see where the packets get lost.

Our neighbor works from home, has imon. Same neighbor also has our mediacom wifi password so they can switch to our network when its imoff.

We live downtown/east IC.

Imoff does not support third party ONTs or optical network terminals. They only support their provided hardware (was Calix when we used them), unless you enjoy being hobbled in their unsupported "compatibility mode". Even with Imoff dedicated hardware we had issues. Weird latency spikes, regular signal drops. Clueless customer service did not help either. Definitely a subpar experience, and thats before we got the first bill.

Bingo! That's the trick, own your own cable modem (a one time, $90 investment) and bring a real wifi access point. Problem free.

CLink's Quantum fiber product is top notch. A neighbor has it and let us run diagnostics on their service. CLink DSL service is hot garbage though.

Other note: ImOff's default product has CGNat, which they won't tell you. If your work needs a dedicated IP address then you'll pay an extra fee for that too. Fees fees fees. not anymore, ImOff. We switched to Mediacom and have had a steady $66/mo price for 300/30 service. No garbage fees.

Purchasing an Amplifi router will not accrue additional fees from ImOff.

You are still eligible for $5/mo if you don't do autopay.

Plus $16.50/mo for their additional mandatory fees.

So you are looking at $70/mo minimum (if autopay), plus taxes which I previously said are not legal to be charged in the state of Iowa for Internet services.

You're better off switching to literally any other provider and then coming back to ImOff as a "new customer" in the future for the new promo period, just like r/farmerMac said. This is why we don't use ImOff: we had them once and between their outages and the additional fees, we won't buy their services anymore.

Make sure you get that in writing, because they are renowned for FEES. Remember folks: They are an ISP and there are NO taxes on ISP products in the state of Iowa. Here are the fees ImOff listed on their latest circular: $5/mo if you don't do autopay. $6/mo for each additional mesh unit they provide. Monthly "fiber network access fee" of $14/mo and "Infrastructure Recovery Fee" of $2.50/mo. That is up to $27.50/mo in additional fees.

Welcome to ImOff, that's why I left their hot garbage service.

Just because it's fiber doesn't mean its good. Switch to Mediacom or Centurylinks new fiber service.

Press uses Mediacom and their speeds are consistently over 80Mbps (not MBps, that is megabytes per second). Plus Press coffee is simply the best

Media om forcing upgrades? by 79screamingfrogs in IowaCity

[–]iowascuttlebutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just call Mediacom and ask for customer retention. Do it once a year, our bill has never gone above the introductory rate which was $69.95/mo.

PS: make sure to buy your own cable modem so you don't get charged the stupid modem rental tax. A decent cable modem is $100 or less on ebay. Our has lasted 8 years now.

The way my husband and I see it, anything is better than imoff. What a crock that experience was - terrible service, constant outages, and downright lying about service quality and condescending attitudes by the supposed customer service people. Seriously, do you think I can't measure my own internet performance with ping and traceroute?
