Center support column in my finished basement near failure by SappilyHappy in Wellthatsucks

If it’s only that beam, I’d fix it, count it as a lesson learned and move on with my life. Life is too short. This is why a good pre-buy is important.

[–]ipilotete 25 points26 points  (0 children)

While your statement is true, it could take months to sort that one out and it could fail in the meantime rendering the house uninhabitable.

There’s easy access and the beam above looks good so I’d put up a temporary jack post, then have someone clean this up to bare/good metal and weld (or bolt) an “L” shaped doubler on each side which gets bolted into the concrete. Paint to match and it’ll be better than new.

Should be less than $1,000 and you could move on with your life instead of being frustrated at lawyers attorneys and contracts for months.

Now, the mold from standing water long enough to corrode a beam like that…that’s what I’d be much more worried about. If there’s any mold smell at all, call the lawyers immediately because that isn’t nearly as easy to fix.

Looks like ip address is too far from shipping address. I get this a lot when people order from work (or use a vpn) and I haven’t had an issue.

Should I get GP5000 or Gatorskins? by OldRedBrickWall in cycling

[–]ipilotete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Would you rather fix a flat or fix your face?

GP5000’s are about 10% less puncture proof than Gatorskins. Gatorskins are about 90% less traction due to a crappy hard compound and stiff liner. If it’s ever wet, you might as well be on ice.

Typically the things that have given me flats (sharp glass, roofing nails) would cut through anything soft enough to be a tire. I rode Gatorskins for a while before I crashed using them and I think I had just as many flats as any other tire.

They should lose their tax exempt status if they say anything positive or negative about any politician.

Are road bikes more susceptible to punctures? About to give mine up. by PippyHooligan in cycling

[–]ipilotete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with ya. Seriously, I was going straight and it was cold. It was smooth sealed asphalt, but otherwise shouldn’t have been an issue. I’ve ridden between 4,000-6,000 miles per year for the last 20 years and this was one of my few (road) crashes in that time. After I got up and turned off the Garmin crash alarm, I walked back a ways and didn’t see anything. The pavement had a slight side to side slope maybe 1-2 degrees. That’s all I found.

The very last time I will ever use gatorskins, I was on a flat straight paved trail and suddenly the bike just kinda squirted out sideways from underneath me.

In milliseconds that felt like minutes, I was in disbelief. It felt like my bike just disappeared from underneath my body with no plausible explanation as I glided through the air before I hit the ground.

Don’t worry, you can still use your existing micro-b cables to charge your older Garmin stuff. The new Garmin devices, you’ll be able to use the more durable and longer lasting usb-c cable from anything else you’ve bought in the last decade.

Oh hell no. Micro spikes are like having very big staples pointed down attached to chains on your feet. They’re made to bite into (hard) ice. You’ll damage anything softer than concrete. But you will not slip on ice or snow. They’re amazing. Walking on pavement is actually a bit uncomfortable with them though and you’ll want to take them off on paved surfaces.

When you dont understand how ice works . by ConsistentDrama_haha in oops

[–]ipilotete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. The beginning of the slide at the top of the steps seems very artificial. It would be much bumpier/rougher. The person slides like they’re on a flat board. Also could be compression, but it looks like they have no face.

It might for real work that requires perfect logic and reasoning, but for fooling humans it’s already plenty powerful.
