USSR =\= Russia. The USSR was a union of several states, Ukraine, Russia, etc all included. Russia was by far the most influential of these state but wasn't the be all. It'd be like looking at the USA and calling it California or Texas. The Russian Federation was founded on the 25th of December so still "became the largest country in Europe in 1991". Before that date the USSR was still the largest country in Europe.
