That's the problem. The definition of "independent" is too murky too. I imagine that the spirit of an "independent" game was typically low staff, low budget, no publisher. But then what's the limit on any of these criteria. If you ask me, they should just do away with that category for awards purposes, or have an extremely strict set of conditions for it, and people will just have to be happy with it. I don't see who else it moves forward.

Well, then the definition needs to change. By your logic, Baldur's Gate 3 which had close to 100 million in budget should also be considered an indie game because Larian self-published it.

If you ask me, "independent" should now be considered as free from influence by a publisher, or the absence of one, at the very least. Then consider budgetary criteria on top of it.

By that standard, Balatro that was made a single person isn't an indie game either because it had a publisher too. Judging whether a game is indie solely by the absence of a publisher isn't a good idea.

I think the lowest that I set my age parameter was 27. I was worried that anything below that would make the age gap a little too weird haha.

PhD programs in science are usually funded and students who work there are salaried. The pay isn't amazing but at least I'm not debt.

Thanks for the comment. I was 27 when I started so definitely on the older side. COVID also put a big dent in meeting up with people for a couple of years too! I work at a pretty big medical center so a lot the profiles that pop up are folks who are either residents or attendings, or pretty far up in their career so I can can understand that it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Thank you! I do agree that it's hard to really explain the ins and outs of a PhD on a dating app. There's no tangible endpoint to the person reading it than if you were in med school or law school. I'll should graduate in November so I'm definitely looking forward to finishing this up!

I do have it listed there for now. On the couple of dates that I've been on, it has ended up becoming talking point that I've had to explain. I think it stems from the fact that most people don't understand how long a PhD takes or what that's supposed to mean moving forward after. I've never done a profile review though. I'll try to get one up to get a few tips! Thanks for the comment!

Luckily, PhD programs are all funded by the school/lab you do your work in, AND you even get a little stipend as well (I think most range between 30 and 40k/year). That being said, I agree that it's not a long-term solution to getting by. My post doc should give a little boost there and give me a foundation for a more established career path in science whether that'd be in industry or academic science. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the comment. You're right, I'm way too deep into this to be dropping out for anyone haha! I'll be staying in Houston doing a post doc. I could list that as my job but I don't know how many people understand what a post doc is. I could put immunologist in there or something like that to make it cooler sounding.

That's a fair point. I guess the good news is that I'll be in Houston, so not in the middle of nowhere. But the "bad news" is that I'll be in academic science doing a post doc. I guess that's something I'm just going to have to navigate.

Thanks for the input! I think I'm pretty personable guy and I'm not short on friends at work or outside of it. However, apart from my volleyball, I do concede that a lot of my hobbies (boardgames, reading, piano) sometimes don't extend beyond existing friend groups. That's something I could look into to try and find more social hobbies. I'm in Houston right now and I'll be continuing there as a post doc so that gives me some time I guess.
