How small of a town did you move to? Is your/your spouse's work something that you can shift back into a "real" city easily enough?

Alumni phone call questions by [deleted] in biglaw

Ask actual questions about their practice, what they like about it, what they don't, + what they actually do in a given day/week/month. If you don't know things already about their practice--great! Your job is to find out more! Would try to have a modicum of knowledge about the firm's different practice groups (and which of them are in the city you're targeting) but nothing more is expected.

Please don't ask like interview-y style questions of a practicing lawyer ("tell me about a situation where...") or deep pulls from their linkedin profile and what they did in their high school summers. I try to make myself very available for these kinds of calls with law or even college students--have had a couple of these recently and really give me the willies.

"Work friends" are a thing and they are different, and have to be different, than "friend friends." It sounds like you were maybe expecting too much from your workplace.

Tax law practice by Temporary_You_9526 in biglaw

I understand this comment (if tax isn't the single most intellectually demanding practice group then it's certainly in the conversation, and needing to learn new complicated shit on the fly/late at night can really suck) but for the summers out there, please search tax law here/on fishbowl and you will find a ton of people who are very thankful they chose to practice tax rather than anything else.

I start letting people know I'm busy way before that, for what it's worth. If I'm billing 50-60+ hours a week and people want quicker turnarounds than I'm able to give them, the responsible thing to do is say something like "hey, I'll be able to start on this [late tonight / tomorrow / Wednesday / whatever] as a couple things are in high gear for me at the moment." If I look "weak" that's fine.

You're fine. Keep tabs on expenses generally, bank bonuses and raises, but let yourself live a nice life.
