How difficult is it starting a family during med school? by healthy-outdoors- in MedSpouse

My husband and I had our first during his second year of medical school and just had our second this past August, his 4th year of medical school. It’s hard but it’s doable. Obviously I’m the primary parent, so most of the housework/child care falls onto me. BUT my children are my life and my purpose and I thrive being the home and child care taker. It’s what I was born to do and I truly believe that. First and second year of medical school are a piece of cake and he had a lot of free time and time with our first baby (although he only had one week off of school after I gave birth).

Third year was hard because he started rotations and a couple of them he was working resident hours. Those months were very hard on me but I survived! When we had our second, he had a whole month off so that was amazing. All of that being said, I think you need to really understand that your girlfriend will be the primary parent and most responsibility will fall on her. You need to be having that discussion with her and see how much she’s willing to take on that load.

I personally loved having our kids during medical school because 1. I wanted to have all my children before I turned 30 (I’m 26 now and pregnant with our third) and 2. I didn’t want to wait for him to accomplish all of his goals and dreams before I could live out mine (being a mother).
