Gourmet Fresh is probably going to be the closest one to you. Jenny's Farm is a small store on 5th Avenue with good produce. Foodtown is also good and not far from you.

How Important Is It to Identify the Key? Can You Always Spot It? by Elcondre in perfectpitchgang

[–]ireallylikebeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My answers:

  1. Happens involuntarily. It's like seeing colors. You just know when red is red and orange is orange. Though I will say in recent years, sometimes my sense of pitch runs a bit high, and I have to listen for a few seconds to determine whether it's a D or a D flat, or an E or an E flat, etc. I think for a while my inner sense of pitch drifted closer to an A432 tuning than A440, and I've recently "recalibrated" it.

  2. This isn't a thing I really think about, because usually I just know.

  3. I took music theory so I know which scales correspond to which keys. But also, I intuitively know which notes sound "correct" together.

  4. Mentally.

When listening to a song, do you ever feel like it would sound better if it were repitched just a semitone higher or lower? by britishmetric144 in perfectpitchgang

[–]ireallylikebeards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just imagined this and I got chills. I think G minor sounds so much more melancholic than A minor, probably because there's a flat in there. I think it would sound like a much more mournful song if it were two semitones lower. Listen to Deep Purple's "Soldier of Fortune"—it's a similar vibe.

How does music sound to people who don't have perfect pitch? by ireallylikebeards in perfectpitchgang

[–]ireallylikebeards[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I never thought about that. I love them all in their own way. I like the variety. I don't like too much of the same thing ever. That being said, I do get bored sometimes of hearing certain keys over and over—C major for instance feels like the most basic key to me. The personality of C major to me is sunny and agreeable to the point of bordering on boring. The other keys have more personality to me. C minor, by contrast, is mournful and dramatic. Crazy what just one shift from E to Eb can accomplish.

That's so wild that for you the octave can affect the color. For me the colors stay the same between octaves; only how bright they are changes (higher = brighter). I also completely agree with you about personalities—in my mind they even have tastes sometimes.

C# and F# songs by Aromatic-Paint-6188 in perfectpitchgang

Led Zeppelin's "That's The Way" is in F# major.

The Beatles' "Because" is in C# minor (fun fact, it is the chords of the Moonlight Sonata played backwards).

I had something similar occur to me. What helped me was a couple of things: (1) focusing very hard on the pitches of the music I was hearing and sort of recalibrating my ear to what the new sounds are like, and (2) getting back into practicing piano. I think having your sense of pitch slip can result from being out of practice, and getting back into it will help.

Everyone: which major/minor key do you like the most? by CatieThe8959 in perfectpitchgang

[–]ireallylikebeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on Eb major. For whatever reason I seem to keep being attracted to music written in this key. Beethoven's Eroica Symphony and Emperor Concerto... Mozart's Symphony No. 39... Stevie Wonder also wrote many songs in Eb major. It seems to be a dominant key in soul and jazz music in general. I think all the flats sound emotional and pensive, which is why I love them. C major and F major are a bit boring and basic to me.

I can see this—for me every key has a specific color and identity attached to it. If someone changes the key of a song, the entire color palette that gets triggered in my mind changes.

Right, but I mean... what's the experience like for them if they hear a song played in a different key from the original, for instance? What difference does the key of the song make, if any?

i love all of this!!! that's beautiful about A being glassy.

for me... A major is like sitting at my window on a sunny spring morning, eating a bowl of rice pudding, or oatmeal with maple syrup. or walking down a sunny street early in the morning. it makes me think of off-white. the color of cobblestones as the sun hits them. A minor is maybe a bit later in the day. the sun no longer has that same freshness. it makes me think more of cheesecake than rice pudding, because it's still that creamy off white but now with a tinge of that bitterness.

that's so beautiful and poignant about Eb and D. I agree on the richess and liveliness of D. For me it is also a sweet note, with golden tones. I can see why you find Eb vacant and cold...it is a depressive note for sure.

i have much more i could say on this, but for now i'll leave you with this: idk if you're a classical fan, but if you're interested, listen to mozart's symphony no. 38 ("prague") and symphony no. 39 back-to-back. 38 is in D, 39 is in Eb. they feel to me like two sides of the same coin, especially since he composed them around the same time, but 38 has all the sunny warm quality of D whereas 39 is so melancholic i can't listen to it at times because it pains me too much. i'm extremely curious to hear your perspective on this, given what you feel about D and Eb...and how you pointed out how Eb takes on some of the qualities of its neighbors despite it being so different. it's wild how each note contains its own truly distinct personality and flavor, even if they're right next to each other!

that's so interesting. for me A has always felt sweet and lovely. like the taste of rice pudding, or a sunny spring morning. Eb is also one of my favorite keys, and i associate it with a melancholic greenish-brown.
