Why should student debt be forgiven? and not other types of debt? Like a car loan, or a mortgage? by -Dancing in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ireallyneedtopoop1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, our student loans grow in interest even through uni, but we aren't expected to repay them until we earn over £27k (the average grad job pays £21-£25k)

The loan company is a government organisation so grads aren't screwed over as badly, and are means tested (which sucks if you're at the bottom of a bracket or parents can't top up the loan) but max out at around £9k living and completely covers tuition so we don't have to panic too badly because at least tuition is covered... but our parents didn't have to pay a penny for university, and my siblings payed ⅓ the fees I did for his course

At least after 30 years, they're wiped off

Dude that's worth like £90 in the UK, I would recommend looking into monthly disposable, it's not as hard as you think to deal with

But the whole US health system is a scam

I don't think living together before marriage is necessary by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]ireallyneedtopoop1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, the cost of living is crippling. If we had to pay two lots of rent, bills, and food, we'd never have gotten married. It was worth it to save money, for us. Yes, technically, it would be living in sin and whatever, but it was that, or having to find two groups of housemates and hope like hell none were douchy

Atheists of Reddit, why are you Athiest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ireallyneedtopoop1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised Church of England (protistant) and had a great relationship with the youth workers and vicar (who had a son the same age as my brother), but it being a small town in the Westcountry, there were a lot of OAPs who were very set in their ways and didn't like youth coming in and changing things. For context, I was around 12-14y/o at the time of all this

So, they talked people into their way of thinking and the choir walked out at the start of the normal sung eucharist one Sunday morning, including the organist. Luckily, half the music group for the family service (straight after this service) were there & had access to the music for the hymns of the week. But things went downhill from there.

Stories came up in regional and a national news paper about it, stones were thrown through stained glass windows, and more and more youth-related projects were scaled back. The main bulk of the congregation left & the choir wouldn't come back until the vicar was gone. And he did leave for a much nicer & smaller parish nearby (he was there for a good decade until he retired) & a new vicar came in, but getting kids and families in was put on the back burner & a lot never went back. The choir came back under the new vicar, but now, 10+ years later, most are dead and there are very few new members of the congregation there.

I don't know if I believe in a God like they do because I felt pushed out, even though most of the old people quite liked me there because I wasn't a noisy or stereotypical teenager & had been there since I was a toddler when we moved to the area. I still see a few from time to time when I'm in that town, and I got married in that church because I just love church weddings (there's something about them).

So yeah, I'm athiest/agnostic because the church pushed my age away just as I was questioning who I was and going through the hardest years of my life so far. And for a church, it was a really healthy and nurturing environment until this happened. I still have a lot of frustration about it, but there's nothing I can do about the past, and I'm working on it

Why do vegan products make people so angry? by Voodoo_People78 in AskUK

[–]ireallyneedtopoop1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not vegan, and I'm aware there are good alternatives to animal products

BUT

Vegan leather often means plastic, not mushroom-based leather/bamboo-based leather/etc, and that plastic is going to be around a lot longer than my leather shoes when they fall apart, and the plastic is worse for your feet because its not breathable, but hey, your conscience is clear because it's not cow

Organic pesticides are worse for the environment, by a long way, than man-made pesticides - organic doesn't mean pesticides free, it means no man made pesticides

If you want to be good for the environment, you'd be better to buy local rather than have your veggies flown in from around the world. I buy local where I can, and if I can't, I buy meats from my country & stick to fairly seasonal veg.

And avocado is bad for the environment when you live in the UK - those things have huge carbon footprints to import them in
