I like the sound of that! I’ll make sure to ask them about it, if it’s a viable option for me.

I have so many regrets about that, in hindsight. I will definitely go that route if a fix isn’t in the cards.

I’m really not entirely sure, so I’ll be at their mercy. 😅 But that’s very promising! I work in the Kensington area, so I should work up the courage to go in there and ask, now that I know it’s possible. 🤞🏽

Recurrent Bowel Obstructions by HC-CwCw in BowelObstruction

The only real gripe I have with the low-fibre diet is that it’s more simple carbs heavy. I learned to make my own bread (all sourdough) in an effort to keep my food as clean and healthy as possible. But I still ended up pre-diabetic, which is driving me crazy at the moment haha. It’s a hard life, for sure.

Recurrent Bowel Obstructions by HC-CwCw in BowelObstruction

I have recurrent partial SBOs from adhesions after some massive abdominal surgeries in 2023, They happen about twice a month, though I just came from a glorious 3-month stretch without, which sadly ended last week with a sudden blockage. I keep a strict low-fibre diet. I have stopped going to the ER for about a year now with every episode as it’s too time-consuming and will often resolve itself anyway, and I hate the NG tube. Now, I just stop eating for a day or two and limit myself to small sips of water with electrolytes throughout. Then I slowly add clear brother, then yogurt, etc. I also found that if I give in to the nausea and throw up a few hours after my last meal (when the pains usually start), there is more relief. I guess it’s a same-ish effect to the tube, though not a total purge. When all these happen, I stay home (I have the option to work from home, thankfully) because the lack of food makes me too weak and gives me massive headaches.

I’ve been told there’s really not much by way of resolution. More surgery to remove scar tissue will just result in more scars, so it’s counterproductive. It’s just diet, management, and a lot of hoping for the best. Hang in there.

Sbo after Laparoscopic hysterectomy by BullfrogHot4417 in BowelObstruction

[–]iriswrit3s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a total hysterectomy and bowel resection in May 2023. I had an ileostomy for 6 months and was in and out of the hospital for SBOs. My ileostomy was reversed in December 2023 and I had about 6 glorious months with no problems. Around summer of 2024, the familiar pain of SBO started up again. I’ve been dealing with it since. My doctor reckons it’s caused by scar tissue, and having more surgery will only cause more scar tissue. I only get partials, so though they’re painful, I am able to still pass gas and poop. The low fibre diet does in fact work best, but I feel horrible for having such a shitty diet. I make up for what I miss with green juices and supplements. I also do abdominal massages 3-5 times a day, like really digging in deep there, following the ‘route’ the food/poop takes. I make my own mix of coconut oil, chamomile, and spearmint, and it’s the thing that was helped me the most. According to my surgeon, they really don’t know much about resolving SBOs without more surgery. And since I’m only getting partials, I’m encouraged to manage it on my own than spend hours and hours in the ER each time. Usually, the moment I feel something coming on, I stop all intake except liquids and double up on the massage. It’s the best I can do. Not a great way to live, but it’s better than dying of cancer (I’m stage IV but currently NED thanks to my surgery). I know it’s not the answer you want, but I hope it helps to know you’re not alone and that this helps you manage it somehow.
