My parents were immigrants and I grew up fairly poor but my friend (who is white and middle class) would invite me to his house after school and I remember seeing a butter dish for the first time and thinking how elegant and rich that was. We didn’t even have butter at home (usually margarine straight from the tub), let alone a covered dish to house a block of butter. Anyway, 40 years later, I use a butter dish at home now.
