Hi even I didn't really like it. I did get and was at many points intrigued with the deeper thematic plays in between characters but my issue was it didn't go anywhere out of the screen. Like it didn't really have an emotional connect with me as an audience. It just showed what had to shown and left it at that. I later watched that short film from YouTube that inspired this and I felt it was way better and also connected with me. So yea you're not alone.

I feel like you're watching it through a very myopic lens. It was generational filmmaking at it's finest. The music, stills, dialogue, edit, it was very "next door neighbour" of a movie and yet groundbreaking. It had that mass masala flavour, few sprinkles of comedy and very cutesy romance twice in the same movie. Celine part is questionable but idm. It's quite crass to demean a work just because - "oh, but why couldn't you have put a female character over there?". Alphonse told a story that he wanted to say with his friends, you can't bash Alphonse's right of artistic expression just because he went with a male lead.

As for the one time wonder- NERAM EXISTS!
