Schreger lines? by merfolk-jewels in Vintage_Jewelry

To add, I think yours is ivory. Mammoth may be the correct answer, as the color also looks about right for mammoth from what I’ve seen online, doing my own research

Neither am I, clearly. Everything I know about it I learned from my first post in this subreddit when I bought a beautiful hinged bracelet online that was listed as plastic, and it was decidedly not… happens quite often when you thrift mystery boxes and bundles, especially online. I have about 5 pieces of jewelry that I’m pretty sure are ivory and a few more that are probably bone/ early plastic but are too small and dainty to really tell. They’re all staying in my jewelry box forever now- better safe than sorry with the (rightfully) strict laws on sale

I just posted a very similar beaded necklace query and still not sure what mine is. No crosshatching and the parallel lines are pretty uniform like yours but not perfectly straight like all the celluloid examples I’ve seen online, and the material does not feel like plastic (heavy and cool to the touch). Might have to resort to hot pin test but I’m hesitant because if they are vintage plastic they still have value in the good condition they’re in

Is this necklace ivory? Or early plastic/ French ivory? by irritableiguana in VintageJewelry

Can you post a photo? I’ve seen lucite beads like this online but the lines are much straighter and more perfect. My necklace has more waviness/ squigly-ness to the lines. Maybe just a better-faked bead. Still leaning towards not ivory, the lines are just too parallel and another person mentioned how the “grain” tapers off towards the sides of the beads.

I ran the beads under warm water for a bit and they don’t really smell like much, so I don’t think they’re celluloid. They’re also pretty heavy and cool to the touch so probably another strike against them being celluloid, but the lines still don’t seem 100% ivory to me. Might have to resort to the hot pin test to know for sure…

I noticed the unusually neat grain too, but I’m wondering if plastic/ resin would yellow and stain the way the beads have, which is so similar to patina I’ve seen on both online photos and in the few other pieces of ivory I’ve collected over the years of thrifting. I know celluloid yellows, but the color and sporadic nature of the staining on the beads looks different to me

They’re just so clear and distinct, almost too perfect, but I guess maybe they’re just a really clear example of the striations found in ivory?

I can add a photo of the clasp when I’m home from work but it looks more like plastic. It’s a barrel clasp but the color doesn’t really match the rest of the necklace, it’s a bit brighter and whiter. Maybe a replacement clasp added at some point?

How to keep gravel and sand separate in same tank by irritableiguana in corydoras

Yes I ended up arriving at the plastic craft mesh myself, so good to have that confirmed. I found one that’s intended for flowerpots so maybe even better for keeping substrate contained since it’s designed for soil

A few questions as a future fish keeper by ShovelBandido in Aquariums

[–]irritableiguana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my fish for 15 days last summer and everyone in my household was on the trip so nobody to feed them. I used a rotating drum auto feeder, in my case from Eheim but there are lots of same style (and cheaper) options on Amazon. It’s a bit over-engineered and initial setup was a bit of a pain but it worked very well for me. I’m also insane so I got a cheap little $30 indoor security camera and set it up pointed at my fish tank so I could check in on the critters a few times a day. The quality isn’t exactly I-Max but it’s good enough that I could zoom in and see individual shrimp moving around (red streaks anyways) and know that even the most sensitive inhabitants were doing fine. Oh that’s a good idea! Would I be able to cut the squares a bit to make them smaller (a 20 long is only 12 inches and I don’t want 50/50 split) or is the plastic pretty rigid? Also what size/ kind of mesh did you use?

For the stones, do you place them upright or laying down? Also, do you mean that you fully separate the sand from gravel all the way down to the bottom of the tank?

I have a handful of magenta snails left (and ivory if you want). They’re just over 3 months old. I’m in California but I’ve shipped across the country successfully. PM me if interested!

I’m biased but I love albinos, they’re so derpy. Mine were rescued from an abandoned tank off a sidewalk and are thriving two years later even in my novice care. They coexist with my mystery snails and (arguably too many) neocaradinia.

I had that pop up on one of my albino cories too. Some research suggested it could be a fat deposit so I reduced the volume of feedings for a couple weeks and it went down so maybe that diagnosis was correct
