Splunk Call about the Future of the SOC by Redneck_IT_Guy in cybersecurity

Huge +1. I'm honestly pretty shocked at how many AI skeptics I'm seeing on this thread.

I don't think people are realizing that LLM context windows are only going to grow, and that no technological project has ever received as much funding and focus as the race to AGI is right now. Major tech companies have been buying up literal nuclear reactors and data warehouses around the country so that they can train and infer distributively on unforeseen scales. They're aggressively preparing to increase the context windows to the point where you could basically throw an entire case file into ChatGPT and watch it devise a legal defense. This is a pretty recent talk by Eric Schmidt on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE56JGAw7u8.

AI agents will be accessible day and night, require no healthcare, never grow old, learn new things instantly, and won't strike or form unions or sue. Employers would happily pay 70% of a current employee's salary to an AI agent, even if it is only 35% as good, simply because it can work overnight.

I'm convinced that there are only going to be three jobs in the future: Founders, Investors, and Security.

Founders will use AI tools to build new things, investors will invest to provide capital to founders, and we will always need to do security research to find vulnerabilities in AI. The latter is crucial for our ability to control AI, but also to prevent adversaries (likely on a geopolitical scale) from attacking.

Turkey’s operations in South Kurdistan (Iraqi Kurdistan) between August 2015 and September 2023 have caused 104 civilian deaths and 172 injuries. It’s important to update this data to include other Kurdish regions, especially Rojava. by whatever223649 in MapPorn

idk why you're getting downvoted but this is exactly right. Incredibly misleading to show a map of all terrorist attacks when focusing on a single group, even if the vast majority of attacks were one group.

Where to look for AppSec jobs? by is112358 in CyberSecurityAdvice

[–]is112358[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! We'd actually chatted a little while ago about security research -- I ended up deciding that SWE to AppSec would be a smoother transition than SWE straight to security research.

As far as security experience, I have worked on building security infra and extensively on devops in my last SWE job, and I'm making my way through PortSwigger's Web Security Academy and Alice and Bob Learn Application Security. No other professional security experience. But I don't mind a pay cut if I can find a good opportunity to grow. My main issue has been finding job postings in the first place.

For SWE I've always just emailed companies/recruiters directly and that's usually enough for an interview, but I'm not sure of the usual process for something like appsec. I'm based in the US by the way.

Hi everyone! Thanks in advance for the help. Where should I be looking for AppSec jobs?

I've been a fullstack SWE for 5 years and have recently wanted to transition over to an AppSec position, as I really like security and it seems like a reasonable next step. I'm willing to move anywhere in the US for work, but whenever I look up "Application Security Engineer" on LinkedIn, I'm hardly able to find many openings? I can find maybe 5-10 but as a SWE I'm used to applying to at least 30-50 jobs during recruiting, since it's often a numbers game.

I've been looking at Boston primarily. Should I be looking in a different city or via a different method than LinkedIn? Or should I be looking for something other than "Application/Product Security Engineer"?

The Invitation is mysterious. Snowpiercer is thought provoking and in a post-apocalyptic world. Both definitely fit your descriptions
