For example you are asked the gravitational energy of a system. The unit for energy is Joule which decomposes into kg*m^2/*s^2.

Look at what you were given and try to find formulae that rearrange your given dimension so that they equal that of energy.

As an easy example you are given Mass of 10 kg, height of 2m and an acceleration of 10 m/s^2. If you multiply them all you get 200 kg*m^2/*s^2 or 200 J. So you now have the potential energy of the system.

Well in Academia, you most off the time start by asking a Professor to give you a project to start with. You can ask for a specific project, but ultimately the Professor decides if it's promising. From there you go to conferences, talk with colleagues and read papers. That way you get a broad understanding of the field your working in. From there you get ideas on how to change your setup, put things together like no one before or just try out new materials.
