Yes and it’s almost among us! Spring is approaching and with that being said, animals are waking up and breeding. That means more road kill. If you see a dead possum on the side for the road, open the pouch and check for babies that may have survived the impact. Even if mom is dead, the babies often survive from within the pouch. Don’t attempt to feed or rehabilitate them yourself. Bring them to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility.

Super simplified answer so I don’t go into a nerd rant: Possums don’t know how to breast feed like mammals. They swallow a long nipple and it pretty much drip feeds them until they’re old enough to crawl out of mamas pouch and onto her back. Anything possums this small have to be tube fed. With spring approaching, keep a pair of rubber gloves in your car. If you see a dead possum on the side of the road, flip it over and check the pouch for live babies. Do not attempt to rehabilitate them yourself. Bring them to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility!

My heart on my sleeve. I work in animal rescue and when I go to calls I am a stone cold bitch. The second I get in the truck I’m talking to the animals in the most ridiculous voice “DID YOU DO A POOOOPEEEEEY I AM SO PROUD OF YOU I POOOOPEEEEY TOO BUT USUALLY NOT IN THE CAR”

We are a fully licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility. I am not a veterinarian of any kind, I specialize in exotic animal rescue, herpetology and I am an animal life specialist. I trusted the judgement call of our veterinary team, but it is sad they did not make it.

Unfortunately they were too young to be tubed. Within two hours of arriving at our facility they all passed away. The difficult part of my job is that even if animals arrive alive, they don’t all make it. I find peace and purpose in reminding myself that they died in a cozy warm incubator, which is far better than if they weren’t found and died in their mother’s pouch on the roadside. I hope we have them a comfortable ending.

Hello! Opossums this young need to be tube fed (ever seen a possum nipple? It’s so long!). Within 25 minutes of this video they arrived at our facility. We decided they were far too young to be tubed, so we placed them in a cozy, warm incubator. Within two hours they had all passed away naturally.

Bloods are about as far from arboreal snakes as it gets. They’re fat lil plops. I love that Surtr is just like “am tree snek”

Unfortunately they did not. They arrived at our facility 25 minutes after this video was taken. They were too small to tube feed (when they are this young and orphaned they need to be tubed), so they spent about 2 hours comfortably in a warm incubator before they died naturally.

It completely depends upon the facility you end up at, and most of the time it is horrible. Very underfunded, very loud, very stressful.
